Members wwwjd
ARE "FREE SERVICES" permitted here? If not, just please delete. My post got deleted from Gear Sluts. Just looking to improve my skillset on a variety of material. If you have a FINAL MIXED SONG, not mastered yet, I am looking for a variety of practice material. Please, no songs needing "mixing help", this is final mastering only. The amount I can handle will be limited, and I must stop doing this by the end of next weekend. I used a combination of software and/or hardware, the brands and models of which are unimportant if the final product satisfies. You can send me up to a 5 or so minute song. Or a partial if you just want to see how it comes out. Pick your poison: 1. basic limiting and minor EQ correction - not a lot of loudness added 2. commercial ready: full adjustments, radio / CD ready (much loudness). An example song you wish to sound like would help me understand what you want to hear as a result. 3. (the scary one) MY ARTISTIC INPUT: I will wear my producer hat and do what I feel is best to make it a competative sellable product in today's market. Nearly any file type is acceptable. The higher quality you send the better it can end up. Less than 192kbps MP3 will not be accepted. You can PM me, use SENDSPACE, BOX.net etc whatever, I am computer savvy. I can only do this a week or so. All music and recording rights remain your own and will be completed deleted from my system when done. Should you use my master for anything cool, all I ask is a simple credit - not interested in money. My last project as example: GALLERY OF VOICES http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_dmus...%20Of%20Voices (crappy AMAZON previews)

Members donaldcrunk
if you're interested in trying your hand at some more 'experimental' stuff i've got a track that needs to be 'evened out' and whatever else you would like to do to it. however, it's 16 minutes long in the meantime, ill check around and see if i have any shorter ones from way back when. Members wwwjd
I'm afraid 16 minutes is too long for me to fit it in. Sorry. Let me know if you can find something shorter.
Members pogo97
Here's two versions of the song "Don't Write Songs." One is what I sent to wwwjd and the other is the same but with his mastering. We've discussed our general thoughts about the result--I'd be interested to read what other ears hear. file A file B
Members stickman393
Wow, that's quite a difference. I prefer the "B" version.
Members Moogasaur
Interesting. I like the A version better. I like it because all of the sounds (esp. the voice) seem to stand out more in the mix. The slight downside is that it seems like the vocal is slightly distorted at times. I am listening with headphones, so I don't know how it would sound on a real system.
Members wwwjd
ouch! And I just heard a hidious distortion in the piano part. I'd say THAT needs a redo big time
Members Moogasaur
Does that mean that the A version is the mastered one? The distortion that I hear isn't a blatant one. It might be a characteristic of the mic itself. It's very minimal. Would you be interested in mastering an instrumental I did? It's about 7 minutes long. Members wwwjd
Yes... I'll do a 7 minute song. (now everyone will throw their coffee mugs at me) PM me a link and I can get it back to you in a day or two.

We've discussed our general thoughts about the result--I'd be interested to read what other ears hear.file Afile B * File A sounds with a little distortion / over-compressed. Voice is certainly clearer, but the dynamics were mostly killed. Loud. * File B sounds what an unmastered song sounds like, still sweet sounding. Members wwwjd
yeah it was a very good mix to begin with. Doug let me push the envelope on it and I pushed it too far! Wanted to bring his nice voice out and bring things up but pushed the overkill button. Easy to fix though. Great feedback though, and I'm having a lot of fun and learning some things too. Members pogo97
For which I thank you very much. I've learned a lot, too. Would you be game to give it another shot with the feedback considered? The original file is still there.
Members wwwjd
yeah I'll try again. I've got some thoughts on the proper corrections needed, just need to work on it this eve. the one thing I am learning through this process, is I may not be cut out to master other people's stuff. Every song I've mastered this weekend, I listen and want to reach in and adjust the mix in different ways. For example, your mix is fine, but when I find myself globally boosting the high end to bring out the guitars and vocals better in mastering, I want to say the best thing to do is to do some of that EQing individually on those tracks... instead of on the master. Make the mix itself closer to the end result so there is less to master. It's easier to tweak the vocal EQ to shine, and the guitar EQ to best bring it out, than it is to do both at once at the end. I'm not as comfortable trying to make the most of the 2 track final, when I want to fix things in the mix first. This is MY personal issue - and I am realizing this through this test mastering experiment.
Members wwwjd
All caught up! 10 completed, got lots of great feedback, and I'm having fun. Do you need a song mastered? Or even have one laying around and wonder what it COULD sound like if mastered differently. Post it to me.
Members pogo97
Here's wwwjd's second shot at mastering that song. To my ears, he's dealt with pretty much all the issues: don't write songs version C
Members gregwar
wwjd seen your thread(s) on gs glad to see you switched to the better community. I'm currently working on 2 instrumental 80s synth pop tracks. it's a huge departure from what we do but fun nonetheless. I thought this could be the perfect opportunity for both of us to 'collab' the tracks should be finished hopefully in a week or so. I can send you two versions of one or the other, which ever you prefer or both. then if your interested I can do my usual in-house 'mastering' and you can do yours. I'd prefer you got all out creative so just choose whichever moves you. looking forwards to this, gregwar
Members wwwjd
Sure. PM me links with the tunes. My time for this is shrinking quick new the end of this week, so it will take me a couple days to get back to you with a mastered version. Do you want 80's tunes to be mastered like it is the 80's, or mastered like 80's tunes could sound mastered like today's music?

Members Jill
I have a song that would probably be good practice for you. This was my first time recording a full band in Pro Tools M-powered, and there are pops due to the firewire processor being overloaded. (I switched my external hard drive to USB to fix the problem.) The other problem is a ringing from the bass on the root note. The song has not been mastered at all and really needs help. Option 2 please. I can also send you the AIFF file.http://www.box.net/shared/i8sszys9zp/1/82909786#/shared/i8sszys9zp/1/82909786/721460636/
