I mentioned this before... joining a chorus or choir at church, school or locally is always a good start.. Free advice and lessons and lots of practice.. and you're surrounded by lots of other singers :)

Singing is WAY more basic than guitar. Just open your mouth and let go. Seriously, take time and just sing for a while on your own, get to know what you like and don't like.

I'm a little skeptical of vocal coaches, unless you want to sing like the attention-starved on American Idol. If that's your thing, then I would seek out a coach right away.

The church thing isnt for me...as soon as tryed to recruit me to their religion I would leave...so that we be a 2 minute experience.

Please dont take offense, i thnk your advice is very sound for anyone who enjoys the church enviroment.

Idealy I would like to be able to sing any style of music, pop, rock, dave matthews..(seems like he's his own category)...So maybe the coach, in combination with the letting it out will be best. Thanks for the advice.

Just learn the three basic rules for perfect singing:

- warm up before you start

- sing natural

- warm down once you've finished

(ahh, well, then there's plenty of sub-rules...:-)))

Jokes apart, a private teacher can really help you out with the fundamentals, and I mean breathing techniques, control of pitch and tone, expansion of vocal range, improvement of vocal stamina and strength, plus a lot more.

This is mainly meant to let you gain more confidence with your natural abilities, to give you a deeper control over your voice and also, as jigsaw correctly said, to prevent yourself from damaging your chords, in case you sistematicly push your voice too far.

But this is just technique, and it's not strictly necessary, even if it would support and enhance your vocal instinct.

On the other side, feeling and talent cannot be taught...

so just learn what's learnable.

The rest is up to you only.
