any theory aces want to help me out of a rut? the guitar forums were pretty useless as far as helping me on this... i cant for the life of me create a bassline to loop (with my new looping toy) that i can use for multiple progressions, in other words a bass line that remains effective under my bridge, chorus, verse etc. that, or i cant figure out how to create a bridge, chorus, verse, etc to fit my bassline. i know this should be simple but i just cant figure out why. for example i went with the quite simple, one note per measure A D E E A D E E and yet could only come up a few ways to do it that didnt sound good. i must be missing a tremendous chunk of music knowlage to not be able to do this! someone give me some advice, any at all, to get me up and looping!

ps just because i know that might not have made sense, heres what i want to be able to do: create a bassline, add little harmonic effects, add percussive effects, and have this loop suitable for a whole song. i can create some very cool loops, but i cant seem to make them more versitile (spelling?)

Have you tried twelve-bar blues?

(Ha-ha, that's funny! ...Twelve-bar blues! Ha! ...You're killing me!)

Anyway, to me you're describing what those cheesy organs play when you're learning "Michael Row the Boat Ashore".

The trouble you're having is common to people who believe they can play bass (like alot of guitarists). Bass playing is a whole lot more than just playing root notes. A good bassist understands harmony theory well. Listen to a little Leland Sklar....he kills!

If you want a single bass line to "fit" over an entire song, you either need to limit the amount of different chords you play or have a lengthy bassline.

If you don't understand theory at all, then asking someone for help without getting too "theoretical" is a little difficult. If you don't understand how bass lines work in the first place, then it gets even more difficult.

I think you need to learn a little theory and bass, keep trying different things till you stumble onto something, or have a bass player write one for you.

What style of music are we trying to do here, anyway? Are you just experimenting with loops and arranging or are you trying to do a pop/rock song with a constant repetitive bass line?

Sorry if I'm a little confused, but a repetitive bass loop doesn't seem like much fun to me. (I realize that club and house music has that inane, droning, incessant bass thing going on)

The bass is what most people hear when they listen to a tune's progressions anyway, whether they admit it or recognize it or not. And no, I'm not a bassist, but I do play bass. ;)
