Anybody ever have a song stolen?

Oh yes.

One of the first songs I wrote, a very sappy ballad in English, when I was 14 years old. Back then I was playing with a drummer, a friend of mine. The chorus went "Light me a candle, as a sign in the window... blah blah blah"... anyway. He really liked that song. He would always urge me to sing it. Back then I was pretty reclusive and unsure about my voice... I was the only guy around who could remotely sing in tune, so I always got shoved up to the microphone (this still happens to this day, actually). Later on, we parted ways somehow, you know how life is...

Anyway, ten or twelve years later, I am at a "package" concert at a small joint in town. My old friend and his band are playing. I am somewhere in the back rows because I wanna stay "incognito" for these reasons or those.

The third or fourth song they play is what? Wham! There comes the chorus. Slightly different chords, different melody... but there is no mistaking the root. The crowd cheers! My jaw drops. That was an UNREAL moment. Unreal.

Deja vu. They

Yes I have. I wrote the song, did a scratch recording of it and gave it to each band member for them to learn. I wrote out the structure including all the chords to go with the CD. We rehearsed the song, played it live a few times and then I was fired by the band. At that time I was told that they had "already copyrighted" my song because all I did was write the guitar arrangement, not every note in the live performance. They have since recorded the song and put it on their independantly produced CD. I took the song to my new band where we overhauled it and made it far better than the original version and are now recording it on our independant EP. I wrote the song for the last band with good intentions but if they want to get legal, all I have to do is take a deposition as to how they "wrote" the song and how they first came up with it.

Still, the bottom line is to cover your self and register all your work, even those in progress.
