Members Steve M.
Crunk seems to be the latest trend in hip-hop. I was wondering if there was a general consensus on what exactly Crunk is? Since Ciara has been referred to as the queen of Crunk, I will cite the song "Goodies". This song (as well as many before and many after) bears a distinction from hip-hop of earlier eras. Artists such as Run DMC and Busta have written music that focused mainly on words and beats. While artists like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have focused a fair amount on words, but also some on beats, and some on melodies. In contrast the focus of songs such as "Goodies" and 50 Cent's "Disco Inferno" was melody. The focus was so great that the melody was used as the base for both of these songs. This is what I think sets Crunk apart from earlier hip-hop. What do you think? Questions? Comments? What does the word "Crunk" mean to you? Members LDF
Crunk is crazy crossed with drunk, "crazy drunk"= crunk. Beyond that I don't know what else it's supposed to mean.

Members SpacedCowboy
Yet ANOTHER hip-hop buzzword that will soon be rendered tired and played out and no longer used by the hip-hop community just as soon as the caucasian public finally learns how to use it in a sentence. Fo' shizzle.
Members LDF
Further research indicates crunk is a type of hip-hop which I would call "club tunes". It's basically a lot of driving beats and crazy/drunk (crunk) lyrics.

I think heavy use of melody, such as in "Goodies," is something new in hip-hop. I imagine it will stick around for a while.

On a side note, there has also been an injection of eastern style melodies into hip-hop. A lot of Punjabi(North Indian) stuff. Maybe some other stuff too. I can ID melodies as 'not Punjabi' but not as 'not Indian.' I'm not sure whether it is or will be relevant to Crunk.

Members patvalley
Originally posted by Steve M. Has anyone ever heard the term Crunk n' B? Yeah, a good example of Crunk n' B would be "Lovers and Friends" by Lil' Jon, Usher, and Ludacris. It's basically singing over heavy beats, a softer side of true crunk. There's also Crunk Rock- such as "Let's Go" by Lil' Jon, Trick Daddy, and Twista, as well as "Don't {censored} Wit Me" by Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz. "Normal" crunk would be "Damn" by the Youngbloodz and Lil' Jon, "Throw It Up" and "Bia Bia" by Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz. To me, crunk is like the heavy metal of hip-hop. Much more amped up, maybe not as "intelligent", but harder hitting. A lot of people don't seem to realize just how much electric guitar and interesting song structures can be found in a crunk track. It's not all "yeah", "what", "okay". Crunk heavily relies on hard-hitting beats, KILLER bass, loud chanting/gang vox, and mostly minimalistic rapping- although in recent years Lil' Jon has done more and more tracks with skilled lyricists. by the way I am not JUST a crunk fan...I'm mostly an 80s hard rock fan. hope this helpedmy band's site - belowaxis.com
