Are there any good books on songwriting?

But I don't remember the names. I usually accompany my wife when she goes to one of those big bookstores like Walden or Coles, and head to the music section to read. I remember seeing a couple of shelves of 'self-help' books on every aspect of the business.

Are there?

I don't want to discourage you but if you need a book to learn how to write songs, then song writing is not for you. There's nothing such as learning how to write songs, learning sheet music is different but learning to write actual songs/melodies can only come natrual.

Just hum out the words, grab a recorder and start singing whatever you are feeling and write down the lyrics. Write about the day you saw the girl you first fell in love with.

Write about how much watching your kids make you happy.

In my minority un-solicited opinion, there's no book that can teach you to write a great songs. It all comes natrual.

I just did a book review on my favorite book so far:

How To Write Songs on Guitar

I also posted a couple more books here:

HOpe that helps,

I bought this book after reading your review and several similar ones online, and I have to say that other than the strange diatribe in the introduction about sampling and electronic/digital music, I'm really enjoying it. The author did his research, and it's nice to see some of the actual applications of music theory and songwriting techniques. I'm only a few chapters in, but I'm definitely loving it.
