Members phil47uk
I suppose many of us older ones here will remember the court case over Goerge Harrison's' My sweet Lord' and the Chiffons. 'He's so fine'.I was listening to the 19th century composer Glasunov the other day and couldn't think where I have heard that theme before, then it suddenly came to me.. Anyone remember the film 'The right stuff'. Listen to the similarity.Interesting..Anyone else know of any similiarities like this? Members blue2blue
That's one bold set of similarities, all right. Good thing that Glazunov is probably dead (or supernaturally old). It's not just kinda. It's lifted. Oh sh-t! I see Bill Conti won an Academey Award for repackaging Glazunov! That's really bad... I think we should go over to Bill Conti's house and write really mean things on his lawn with toilet paper. An Oscar. Geez. I hate most contemporary film composers anyhow (muffin-heads like John Williams, etc) but this is a bit beyond the pale, unless Conti credited the actual composer somewhere. And if he didn't -- what a low life. PS... Assuming Conti didn't credit the composer, I'm assuming Conti thought he could fly under the radar with this. I've seen over a hundred symphonic concerts and I can't claim any familiarity with Glazunov, at all. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Members Rudolf von Hagenwil
I am not sure if Bill Conti, composer of the soundtrack for "The Right Stuff", would get the royalties when he would fill in Glazunov under composer on the BMI/ASCAP form. However one thing I'm certain, Conti makes a fool out of themself by filling in his name. However, it is possible that an underscorer uses any melody, motif or whole sentences etc. of music the copyright expired, in other words I could re-compose Mozart for a film and put my name under it and some ignoramus would believe it was me and admire me for that fraud. I commemorate for almost any pop song and underscore an older composition. Professional underscorer know exactly when the copyright expired for a classical composition. Btw, in a few years the copyright expires for "Carmina Burana" (1937) by Carl Orff, so in a few years you will hear Orff's music re-composed and signed by Conti's and other tinseltown underscorers. Members WrdsNmuzik
the other big rip-off example that springs to mind was hearing "ghostbusters" for the first time and recognizing the bass line and verse changes from "I want a new drug". it was SO close that I wasn't surprised that huey lewis sued ray parker. but I can also believe that ray parker DIDN'T rip off "I want a new drug". the two songs came out around the same time, so they could've been recorded around the same time, and it's not like it was a completely far-out song structure. we're all using the same notes and chords. a far more potent rip-off was 'teen spirit', which was a pixies song in everything but name. all it was missing was joey's wonderfully spastic lead lines. Was it a specific Pixies song, Wrds, or just a style rip?
Members WrdsNmuzik
oh no, I meant style rip. I seem to remember cobain said something along the lines of "I was trying to write a pixies song"
Members Bread99
Ryan Adams is a big one. He rips everyone off from Neil Young to The Band to The Grateful Dead. I don't have any links, but (if you can find them) listen to The Grateful Dead's "Truckin" and then go listen to Ryan Adams' "29". Don't get me wrong, I love RA. He's been a huge influence on me over the past few years. He just wears his influences on his sleeve as much as I do. :-) -b
