Words and Music by Ernest Buckley

Eight-thirty am, wind at our backs

Doing sixty and its 80, too early to be so hot

We`re in back country, where tensions disappear

And old roads lead to nowhere and thats just fine by me

And it all reminds me of a time not long ago

We were in our twenties and we thought we knew it all

Amazed by the seasons, so much change gone round here

And this land is at peace now but theres a storm somewhere out there

And we see their scowling faces

In their four-wheeled coffins

And I wish there were a way

I wish there were a way

That I could tell them

So we cross Interstate Highways; red lights are all we see

Cars are bumper to bumper, kids complaining in backseats

I see this young couple; their eyes both meet mine

I can tell what they are thinking but it may take them some time

Half way to Montana with some friends up ahead

Maybe headed even further, truth is we got no plans

Want to make good time, got to emphasize the good

Sometimes we stop, ask for direction and stay longer than we should

And we see their scowling faces

In their four-wheeled coffins

And I wish there were a way

I wish there were a way

That I could tell them

And I shout "red-wing blackbird" but you don`t seem to care...
