You Have Your "Hit" Song Recorded...Now What?

You worked hard on that song. All the feedback you've received is positive. You played it out a few places and the crowd responded well.

Now what do you do with it? You got "bigger" plans for it or are you satisfied just knowing you did it? You going to try to sell it? Keep playing it? Forget about it?

What are your plans for all those songs you have?

There's a forum for that! :D

The Music Biz

Discuss career and industry issues including promotion, distribution, tours, and managers.

I'm half-kidding, of course. I think this is a perfectly reasonable topic for a songwriting forum, but, of course, there's probably more practical advice over in the Music Biz forum.

With regard to practical reality, my practice is probably closest to DirkLind. (Although I'm not sure what Kristal is. I'm inclined to Diet Sunkist Sparkling Lemonade, myself, but sometimes I get wild with some Diet Cherry Coke or -- when I'm really feeling out there -- I get down and dirty with some Diet Pepsi Wild Cherry.)

FWIW, all of my finished songs eventually make it up to my song blog, which is not super active (and is, in fact, waiting on its developer, me, to get his ass off playing work and back onto the important job of remaking the blog) but seems, nonetheless, to have developed a life of its own. A modest, somewhat osbcure life, perhaps, but its there. I've been estimating that the DLs are up to around 330K for a while now. I've only done one full count, about a couple years ago, and it was up just a little over 270K (for around 400 songs, mind you). The highest DL count just cracked 11K (pretty shabby compared to those cute, not-too-competent girls doing covers of Nirvana songs on YouTube, of course :D ). That one has the magic phrase "Happy Birthday" in it. (They keep telling us that 'special occasion' songs are among the most searched for.) But almost 50 of my songs have over 2K DLs, and over 150 of them have at least 1K. And these are all highly informal (ie, incredibly sloppy) acoustic versions. So, you know, if you can get things out in front of folks, they will listen. At least for the first few seconds. :D

I send all my hopes and dreams (usually to be crushed) to TAXI. It's always good to get an opinion from those who are in the industry.

But if I believe my music is good and that it's a "hit", I'm making everyone I know (and don't know) listen to it. Sometimes people just like your music because you're their friend. But I want strangers to love my music. I want to make people dance and cry.
