Post 'em! Who's been boiling your stew? Or... who put the ingredients together in the first place?

I got together with some friends last night to go through a night's worth of music in an old R&B, rockin' country style. Looks like I'll be playing out again. Go Saltlickers!

Fun. And this song came up. They scroll their iPod over to this tune to show ol' Lee the changes and... it just killed me. I love it. They do the squeezebox part on harmonica. Dig the funky timing of the turnaround chord changes and elsewhere...

Enjoy...

This song and video had a profound effect on my 12 year old mind. First of all, it was my introduction to the Hammond B3 sound... only I didn't realize what it was because in the video, he was miming on some other sort of organ. I remember I had gotten a Casio keyboard for Christmas that year, found the organ setting and learned both solos.

During a time when MTV played all cheesy hair bands, these guys came along and rocked my world. I couldn't believe musicians could look so... well, normal.

I know... right?

So my place of employment had its annual picnic today. On the beach. Playing all kinds of games a 51, 52 tomorrow, guy should not be playing. As I dove for the orange cone in the sand against 4 other guys 30 years younger, my leg went POP in the sand. %^&*. But I'm OK. I did have my hand on that cone too! Damn! 2 hours later the side of my right calf was jutting out at the basic dimensions of a smallish grapefruit. I've never seen anything like this. The typical response from my coworkers was... HOLY @*!$!!!!! It... uh... really hurts.

OH! And my boss's boss walked up to me on the beach and said, " I played that tune for my wife on YOUTUBE! That one about the kids in the coffee bar? The Joy Division fans?!?!? I love that song. OK then. I'm officially a star! How did he find it? Somebody's checking up on me... is that good? Is that bad? Screw it.

That's my real influence for today. And... happy birthday to me! I watched this every day after school as a kid... too bad it's cut short.
