Members y2kgtp
(Renamed the subject....) I'm putting the pieces together to build the below amp, and I'm not sure what caps I need for the tone control. It looks like I need a 250pf, .1 & .047 what voltage rating should I use for these? Any suggestions? It looked fairly simple to put together, so this is my first amp try from scratch.....
Members y2kgtp
Ok...I was told by a source to use 300, 400v if I can find them....
Members aortizjr
Looking at the schematic and from having one myself... You want at least 250V probably . 300V to 400 to be safe. Higher is perfectly fine as well. At those values, they won't be too hard to find and not that expensive. Check out this place: https://weberspeakerscom.secure.powweb.com/store/capord.htm I have started using some of this stuff and have been happy with them. They are also rated at 630V, which will work perfectly. But also check out Antique Electronics or Mouser for Orange Drops (the standard). Also don't use electrolytic. Ceramic's are... ok, but the Polyester and Polyprop ones are the way to go.
Members aortizjr
Oh and BTW... that is pretty much a stock Fender Champ circuit. So... do some searching around for mods. In particular with the cathode bias. I can't remeber the exact change, but stock like that, it will eat 6V6 tubes. Unless you get something tough like a JJ. Also put a good tranny in it. Maybe even a bit oversized. Then you can run it with a 6L6 or a 5881. I have mine running like that and it is pretty sweet. I am in the middle of moving so my note books are packed, but if you search around on like the Fender Amp Forum, you will find the mod. Basically just a resistor value and cap change on the Bias. Is this basicly the Torres mod they sell for 8$? I was thinking of doing a couple mods, just not sure what yet..... Also, the Output transformers have an "ultralinear tap" I guess I could use as well. This goes to 4 of the 6V6. Similar to a Dr. Z amp, I was told from the supplier as an option. Members aortizjr
Hmm... not sure what Torres mod is. But this really just helps to protect the tube. Not really change the tone very much. Plus since it is cathode biased, it will sorta adjust itself to the right bias. So you don't need it to be adjustable. I love that map BTW. They are great little amps. Oh and for the ultraliner tap, you can do that, but sometimes running full range isn't the greatest for guitar. Plus guitar really has a limited sound range. I think the sweetness in that amp comes from all the right colorations. They are really sweet also with a better speaker. So when you build yours, run it into a 12 or even a 4x12. I love mine like that.

Oh, I need to build a little cab for the unit, so maybe a 12" speaker will find it's way in there, with a output jack for an external cab as well...... Any recommendations on a speaker? Members y2kgtp
Also, any Mods I should consider are all welcome! I still need to determine what I will do the parts layout on...turret board, perforated board, etc? Trying to keep the cost down, while still being able to lay it out nicely..... Members 6942
Sprague Orange Drop caps: .047uf, 400V, on ebay for $3.99 for TWO.Mallory caps: .047uf, 600V, on ebay for $4.99 for ONE. I used the Sprague cap (.022uf, 400V), on a DIY guitar tone control pot.It worked out quite well.Good luck!! Steve
Members aortizjr
Terminal strips are pretty cheap and you can lay it out nicely. I think if you really want to keep the costs down, check out Weber's caps. Nice enough and very well priced.
