Fixing fret buzz

I've got one or two buzzing guitar frets and was wondering how risky it is to try filing them myself. Is there anyone reading this who has experience in this task and can provide guidance as to what type of tool to use, how to do it right, etc....or, should I leave this to a professional tech?

There's alot of possible problems, such as

badly cut nut

set up poorly

High frets

I'd try one of those before doing any drastic measures such as filing the frets.
