Members the_bleeding
Okay, i know how its how the output transformer is connected, but what does it do to your sound?
Moderators isaac42 Posted November 29, 2007 Moderators Share Posted November 29, 2007 I understand the old Sunn tube amps were ultralinear. They sound fine to me.
Members coyote-1
It makes your sound straighter than straight, of course. Okay, i know how its how the output transformer is connected, but what does it do to your sound?

Members Prog
Okay, i know how its how the output transformer is connected Where did you learn that? "Ultralinear" is not a technical term. If someone thinks it is, it came by way of marketing.

If someone thinks it is, it came by way of marketing. oh it is a technical term. :poke: It was even patented in 1937http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-Linear Roccaforte described it to me. Basically the screen voltage fluctuates with the plate voltage... which does a number of things, like both triode and pentode curves, and apparently a more mellow sound. He also noted that marshall and fender have both used this transformer type, and ultra linear output stages apparently sound tweed like. I also did some other research and found that many ampeg bass amps use ultra-linear output transformers because it acts as a sort of feedback loop, thus keeping the amp very clean. But i'm not sure if this is true or not ALSO, further in my research, i found that this is the preferred method of connecting an output transformer up to hifi audio rigs. I couldnt find a straight answer why. :poke: Now, is there anything else about an ultra linear output stage that i havent written here? I really want to know pretty much everything about the tonal qualities because i might be putting it into my homebrew. Thanks
Members Rocket Roll
Silverface Fender amplifiers are ultralinear - Bassman 135, for example. Technical explanation is too much for me, but it "does" a lot "to your sound" - the amp won't "break" (overdrive) until its really, really loud. Way, way too loud. Bassman 135 stays clean (and thus not very responsive) up to the point where your head explodes. Not a very technical explanation, though, and there's much more to be said, it's just that I'm not that well informed myself.
Members tedmich
Okay, i know how its how the output transformer is connected, but what does it do to your sound? ultralinear = low distortion....YUck! Its great for the Merlot drinking audiophile tube heads but makes no sense in a well designed gitar amp Clean tubes is like virgin sex... makes no sense... Its great for the Merlot drinking audiophile tube heads but makes no sense in a well designed gitar amp Clean tubes is like virgin sex... makes no sense... thats what i'm thinking... but the problem is that sunn model t's (the original monsters) are ultralinear, and they seem to get decent crunch. Im thinkin i might have to make 2 homebrews, identical preamps, but one UL and one regular tranny with a switch to disengage the feedback loop and see how different they sound. goddamnit, this means i have to spend another 800$ on parts (tubes, transformers, chassis, headbox and whatnot) for another project hahahha. GODDAMN! well... after this... i'll be able to say that my amps are louder...
Members Tone Eee
I have one of those Bassman 10s (similar to the 135) and it needs hot pickups and/or a boost, but it does crunch. When it does, sounds great! This "ultralinear" setup is great for fuzztones, IMHO, as I can amp the {censored} out of a Fuzzrite and it tears your face off.
