Im building a 4x12 cab at the moment with 4 8ohm speakers. i want to be able to run it at 4 ohms or 8 ohms either through a switch or separate jacks. i think i know how to wire the 8ohm circuit (2 sets of 2 each set wired in parallel then wiring the sets together in series. correct me if im wrong) however im not entirly sure how to get it to a 4 ohm circuit. would running a 8ohm resister in parallel on a switch do it?

there is no way to do that logically. you can get 2 ohms or 8 ohms out a series parallel setup, or it will be just 8 ohms with two parallel circuits in series. if you were to use a resistor, the amp would split the load between the resistor and the 4 speakers together, creating a pretty large drop in output, let alone the resistor needed would more than likely need a heat sink/vent to allow the heat build up to escape. this is on top of the fact that the speakers aren't 8 ohms at every frequency, and other frequencies would result in a slight mismatch.

I was afraid of that. i wasn't sure if a resister would be able to handle the wattage. i may just make a 4 ohm circuit that only runs 2 of the speakers in a partitioned cab. so i could still use my 4ohm head (i only use it for practice anyway) and a 8ohm circuit for recording and live.
