Brian May style sounds with my Ibanez RG1570?

Ok, I've got an Ibanez RG1570 and like the current sounds i can get from it, however I would love to be able to get some Brian May sounds, without having to buy another guitar. Can it be modded without too much hassle?

I've seen a few wiring diagrams for the Red Special, but I'm not too sure if re-wiring my Ibanez in the same fashion would work (as it's not just 3 single coils)

Would it work putting in a phase reverse switch on the middle pickup and putting a coil tap on the humbuckers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just joined a Queen tribute band a couple of months ago and I've been on the same quest as you. Long story short, the amp is the biggest factor, as well as a treble booster (I just ordered one! YAY!). I don't know what you are using for amplification, but that would make the biggest difference. Don't get me wrong, his guitar has a lot to do with his tone, but you can get pretty close without it. I was going to buy a new guitar, but my SSS Strat has been getting close enough for me to keep using it until I have the money to get the Brian May siggy.

My advice to you would be to keep your guitar as is, use the bridge and bridge/mid positions on your pickup selector and try to dial in a nice clean tone on your amp. I hear the Vox Cooltron Over The Top boost is supposed to be a "Brian May in a box" type stomp, worth checking out. And really, after that it is all up to how you play, which is very important. I think this will be as close as you can get with minimal upgrades. You could, of course, wire your pickups in series, which might help, but I'm guessing that with humbuckers it would be almost too fat sounding.

Yeah, I was worried that the humbuckers in series might be too fat, so I was thinking of possibly doing the following:

1 - push/pull tone as a coil tap.

2 - push/pull volume as series/parallel wiring for the pickups.

3 - phase switch added to alter the phase of the middle pickup.

I think that would cover the sounds im trying to get and with the coil tap, the humbuckers shouldn't sound too fat in series.

Do you think this would work? Don't suppose anyone has any wiring diagrams as to how to do this :)

This should have everything you need.

Also, the Red Special pedal is worth looking at.
