so ive been thinking a lot about going to luthier school lately

should i take a semester off and just do it or what?

i want to build arch tops

any of the luthiers of the board got any tips?

what kind of jobs should i expect to get with this at first in the field?

how long should i expect to work before i can branch off and build my own guitars?

I most luthiers become so by being taught by a master as an apprentice. This is a very key thing because most of it is carpentry which is very hands on. My father was a master at carpentry and I learned alot repairing antiques and being a carpenter for a few years. There may be some schools out there but I dont think I'd give them much weight. You may be better off just buying a Kit to start at someplace like stuart McDonalds. There are a few companies that make guitars by hand still but I doubt if theres many openings. I can build a guitar as nice as any thing you can buy out there. The question is whose going to pay for what it costs to build it plus the profit needed for it to be worth while.

The cost of quality supplies is not cheap and the hard work and number of hours required are large. I can go buy an Ibenez archtop for $300 new. I cant Buy the supplies for that much. Nor do I work for $.05 an hour like they do where they get built.

+1

And plus my previous answer when you asked this question in EG.

You could be building right now brother! Your desire is evident, put it to use & just go ahead & do it. I will even step up to the plate and offer you right now, sight unseen, to buy your first arch top for the cost of the parts it takes you to build it..... and that's where the bidding will begin;)

Good luck with what ever you decide on!
