painting onto a guitar

You don't need to strip it, but you do need to make sure that the paint you are using is compatible with what's on there already. If it's apoly finish, then use a poly based product, lacquer, then use lacquer based, etc. To get a really pro looking finished product, you might just wet sand the surface with like a 1500 grit. Then do your art work & after it dries apply a thin coat of clear over the whole thing. This will give the guitar a fresh new finish that hides all the old swirl marks, etc & it will surely protect the new art work.

Good luck!
