Hi guys,

Just finished work on my Harley Benton GA5 amp and would be interested in your comments, suggestions, opinions and of course criticisms.

The link is to my u-tube vid where I've shown a demo of sound samples from clean through metal, with both the stock speaker and through a 1960A cab as well showing a triode/pentode comparison.

There's a list of the work I've done on the right-hand side.

Looking forward to hearing from ya,

Paolo.

SWEEET!!!

Clean is awesome, nice and spanky!

Pentode is a little looser but hotter - I like pentode better, more feel...

Mid gain -> Very nice, just lacks a lil swagger if you know what I mean, maybe its just my tonal preference. Something a bit crunchier... Maybe its because I'm not there? But I really do dig that tone though, dont get me wrong!

-MT2 is ok, but really, its an SS stompbox... Can you record using the MT2 as a boost? Ex; back off the gain as much as possible, but push the output volume to hit the first preamp tube; that should getcha some milk.

Overall, good job man! Its always good to see a fellow DIY'er make successful mods! I'm sure it sounds better than when you originally bought it! Can I see a schematic? I'm curious to see how its built... That way I can also give you more ideas for mods, depending on your inclination for tone... What do you want out of your amp?

Thanks man. Really appreciate your comments. Had look through your amp build post BTW and it's {censored}-cool!!:thu:

Didn't really make my own schematic, just followed the Epi VJ schematic available on-line as it's the same(ish) amp. The sound I was going for was a plexi so I just started picking tone shaping points that needed tweaking eg input impedance, cathode RCs, voltage divider etc. The triode conversion, stand-by and 8ohm out I just got from the VJ forum.

I did try the MT-2 as a boost but I found the stock OT just isn't able for it. The only way I could get a semi convincing metal sound was to roll back the amp volume and use the pedal gain/levels set at noon.

I think with these 5W amps you have to design your mods to the specific amp voicing you want and accept that they're just never going to be that flexible, but then again that's the beauty of them.

I am tempted to buy another one of these though, design the mods for a high gain metal tone and upgrade the OT (Hammond perhaps?) for a tighter low end response. Hmmm...
