Hey all, this is my first post on this forum so if I'm posting in the wrong place or posting the wrong type of question, I'm sorry. I recently came upon a peavy transtube head which emits the same steady hum at any volume (the hum never gets any louder) and barely amplifies the signal at high volume settings. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Think it would be worth fixing? Thanks in advance.

Should definately be worth fixing. Dont run it any more through speakers. If its gone DC it will cook your speakers with 110VAC. Steady AC hum is most likely power supply or power amp related so dont make it any worse by neglecting it.

You can connect a volt meter to the speaker output to confirm that you arent getting Hi Voltage for a few seeconds.

Other than that take it in for repair. Tell them its your backup amp and you want an estimate. Most reputable shops see simular problems with peaveys all the time.

On the repairs I've done on peaveys its varies alot on the cause of failures

which doesnt make them my favorite amp. Sometimes its simple stuff like connectors and corrosion, sometimes preamp transistors go bad when they overpower the preamp with to much gain. It can also be the output transistors got overloaded with the wrong impediance on the speaker cabs, or it can be a power supply issue like I first mentioned. really need to have it checked to know.

Damn things BUSTED; open it up (carefully) while unplugged, carefully replace fuses if blown, look for burned components/wires and replace if found, if nothing obvious ask a tech how much $ for diagnosis, price new on the ebay, and check ratings at HC an weigh the cost.
