Tascam 2488 Problem

Hi All -

I recently purchased a second hand Tascam 2488. What I have learned since, is about half these units are buggy and the other half work acceptably.

And the problem with mine -

I get error messages about one minute into a recording session. The error messages are not always the same. Sometimes it displays "Cannot read from this media" ( from which I can restart a session without rebooting ) or a real nasty System Error 01, 02, or 03, etc. which requires a cold restart to recover from.

Here is an interesting observation: if I create a 32G partition it bombs out after just a few seconds. If I create smaller partitions, I get more recording time before it halts with an error message.

Been all through the web searching for a solution. I have done the whole low level format routine, swapped cables, checked supply voltages, cleaned main logic board and connectors, reseated other cables, touched up suspected solder pads on PS board, etc.

Any suggestions? Sending it off for repair isn't an option, it didnt cost me that much, besides myself being an electronics tech.

Check with your local dealer anyway... Tascam may just replace the unit. They sent mine to Jersey and a few weeks later had a new one. Cost a bench charge ($45)
