i am going to mod a pedal and i want to know when i change a capacitor and i install a new one in a pedal, if volts of capacitor matter.i mean, is it a problem if a capacitor is for 50 volts and not 250 volts for examble?Or i can choose whatever i want? (The current in my country runs at 220 volts)

Thank you.

Friendly,

A good rule of thumb is to have voltage-sensitive components (like capacitors) rated at twice the supply voltage in the circuit. So in a typical stompbox with 9V supply voltage you'd want to have caps rated at 18V or more.

Also, note that most stompboxes don't run on mains voltage (220V in your country), but on 9V. While you can safely use capacitors rated at 250V and above in a stompbox, they can often be too large to comfortably fit on the circuit board (higher voltage tolerance means larger physical size). For that reason alone I'd suggest you don't use caps that are several orders of magnitude above the highest voltage the circuit could possibly see.

If you are replacing a capacitor thats already in a design, use the same voltage rating or higher.

If you are designing your own circuit, you need to follow the first bit of advice that Pillimees said, 2x the supply voltage.

Thank all of you guys. You, really, help me.If i want to change 3 caps in a circuit, can i use caps from different brands? Also,if in an existing circuit (not one that i make on my own) there is a cap with 35 volt and i replace it with a cap with 100 volt,is there any problem in that case?I'm keen on modding my ds-1, my sd-1 and my big muff pi.
