Members musicdog400
Hey pickup gurus. I drew a diagram of what I think the necessary parts would be for a blade pickup. Do I have all the important parts ?
Members Deaf Eddie
Yeah, or you could just wrap the wire around the magnet itself, eliminating the steel blade polepiece. Also commonly done: winding on a plastic bobbin, with a space for the magnet or polepiece through the center of the bobbin, rather than winding right on the pole-piece or magnet. Members musicdog400
Cool, thanks. I just assumed there was some reason pickups were generally made with magnets on bottom and pole pieces on top. Like maybe the magnet too close to the string would affect the string movement. I am in learning mode here.
Members tedmich
magnet shouldn't be TOO strong; lots of rare earth (N45+!) bars on the ebay that will grab your strings (and your sustain) and not let go. Go with tiny rare earths or old alnico or ceramics, pole pieces should be magnetic SS or good old steel (cheap 1018 steel is >95% pure Fe and transmits magnetism great)
