Is is possible to set up a line 6 Variax, or other similar, so that when I am running a midi track on say Cubase, if I strum the strings, the chord or note that is being shown on the midi track will be the chord or note that will play, regardless of the finger positions on the frets.

Ie have a midi track running on say Cubase, with a midi guitar track running, in simple terms, each bar will have a chord input into it, i.e. bar 1 = C, bar2 = D7, bar 3 = G, bar 4 = D7, etc etc etc. What I then want to be able to do is to play the guitar strings, with my fingers anywhere on the fretboard and the chords / notes that come out of the guitar or workbench in the case of using a variax, will be C, D7, G, D7, as instructed by the midi track.

Someone said that using an AX 100 Mk11 and PU 100 would do this, but after reading up on them I dont think thast they will.

Many thanks

I think this is theoretically possible, but I doubt anyone has implemented it. I used to own a variax, and I played an acoustic variax that did alternate tunings.

Also I once plugged my guitar into my auto tune and set it up so that no matter what note I played, only one note (the same note) came out. I thought that was very funny.

The vocal harmonizers do something not far off from this. But you would only play one note, and it would generate the rest.

You're talking about audio to midi conversion. There are a few lame programs that will do it from a normal guitar pickup or a wave file pre recorded but will only work with single clean notes. For multiple notes the waveform is way too complex with overtones and all kinds of in between garbage will appear and false notes pop up because theres no way for the program to separate the notes appart and sees the chord as a single note.

Whats required is a midi pickup and converter. The midi pup has 6 different elements with independant lines going to a midi converter like the rolland. They also make midi guitars that are even better for this. The speed of conversion and picking sensitivity are much better.

I do have a cheaper midi pickup and converter for writing purposes I've messed around with. The pickup fits under the strings on a guitar near the bridge goes through a converter and plugs into a computer port. It has about a second delay between picking the note and getting a sound which makes it useless for any usefull composing but it is neat to be able to hear piano or flute or any other instrument coming from the guitar.
