Theres one at guitarcenter for 100 and theres a sale coming up I was thinking about buying one to mod. THis would be my second step to building a amp. The first would be building a fx pedal. Do you think this would be a wise choice or should I use the money to buy a amp building kit.

I also know there is a lot of mods on these things so are there any you recomend.

I have an Epi Valve jr. head and like it very much.I also got it for $100 and do recommend it for blues & rock. You can mod it cheaply and easily with Bitmo kits to your liking. Building an amp is more expensive and far more difficult.

I am going to second the Valve Jr. I like mine quite a bit, and use it for practice and, just like wikwox says, blues and rock. And they are quite easy to mod, especially with all the kits floating around.

If you are a novice with electronics, I would stay away from amp building for a bit, even with a full kit, as some of the components can be very dangerous. However, if you have a fair amount of electronics experience, go for it!

I'm very satisfied with my EPI jrs. I have two, one I moded with the Bitmo Trio, the other I'm going to try an Alnicomagnet Mod Kit http://stores.ebay.com/alnicomagnet. I just finished a 5E3 Combo (Fender '57 Deluxe). That was a task. Not for beginners. If you do build your own I would recommend buying a complete kit with cab and speaker. You'll save money and won't have fit hassles. I bought mine from 4 different sources  too many little things kept poping up, lack of hardware, holes not sized right etc. Plus if you screw up, who's going to debug it? Heck, just buy the new EPI Hot Rod Jr. from sweetwater. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ValveJrHRHD/
