Anyone here ever built or rebuilt their own pickups?

I have a few epi and esp pickups Im thinking of playing around with. I was just wondering who here may have some experience and would want to share their tips and tricks. I kind have a hankering to try a hand wound alnico 2 and wax pot them. I also have some ideas for new pups but I want to practice rebuilding a few first.

Thanks Jason:thu:

hmmm....I didn't know Dave Hunter made a pickup winding book....I read his Tube Amp book and it was a great read. It's a perfect book for beginners to begin to understand all the electronics theory...anyways, he's a great writer.

I haven't wound any pickups(yet), but I have a friend who does, and he modified a sewing machine with a wind-counter to make pickups. I've also had the idea of using a fishing reel that has the line counter in feet, and using that somehow.

I've been winding pickups for myself for many years now. I have an article on my home brew winder at the tech site. Its is not for the faint of heart. Its lots of work and sometimes for something you won't be happy with in the end. You never know how the pickup sounds until you put it into a guitar. Think of it as painting a guitar but now knowing what it will look like until you plug it in.

Some of the Epi pickups are made with cheap parts like thin plastic bobbins so they may not be worth reusing. Usually these pickups are the one with covers.

Andrew where is the tech site? and do you know a good place to buy the magnets?

If you go to our company site there is a link under Resources -> Technical Articles.

I usually rebuilt pickups so I had already loaded mags. You can buy parts from Stewmac including unload mags.
