Members tlchase68
I was given a Boss HM-2 a while back and promtly put it on the shelf because of its limited range. Are there any worthwhile mods for this particular pedal? I'd love to transform it into something more mild like a BD-2...Is this totally out of the question? Members nbabmf
Why mod it? It's a great, useful pedal on it's own for teh brewtal metalz! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_death_metal
Members tlchase68
I don't play much Swedish Death Metal, but I did listen to a few of the HM-2 clips on YouTube and read some of reviews on HC. This pedal actually seem to perform pretty nicely when setup properly...I'll have to get better acquainted with it! Rawk on!
Members smorgdonkey
That's the only pedal that I ever sold that I regret selling. I loved dialing around with the tone controls on it and finding new distortion sounds. I think all the way down on the low and about 25% on the high was pretty cool with the distortion about 60%. It was a very Whole Lotta Love sound.
Members tlchase68
I think this may be a quality sleeper pedal score, plus the price was pretty hard to beat...It was free!

Members FlyingZ
That $5 thrift sale find is actually next on my fix-it list. Looking at the schematic it appears the mid and treble circuits were combined to save a buck so separating them will be an easy start. Next I'll look at possibly converting it to 9v however I can assume several problems right off the bat.
Members charveldan
My amp tech had a garage sale saturday, i bought an old crybaby for $40 bucks, and a Boss HM-2 for $30 bucks, i was trying to help him out but wish i'd saved my $$$, it' makes my 78' Marshall JMP sound like a peavey combo.:facepalm:
Members tlchase68
I also purchased an older GCB-95 that is in need of an overhaul...It has been on the shelf for several years...Like I tell my wife, it's on my to-do list! Members FlyingZ
The H control is composed of two mid-range cuts best left in the original configuration. All other filtering seems to be done very well for the intended sound. Converting from 12v to 9v would be a major pain. It works exactly the same at 9v except the bypass signal is below unity and the led is weak. A TB mod and an adjusted LED resistor would be the best solution here. It suffers from flubby lows and hideously harsh highs like all solid state distortions. I smoothed it considerably by swapping IC1 with a ba15218n. I adjusted the gain at R20 and eventually returned it to stock. If you can't find a ba15218n just leave it all stock.

Members tlchase68
BTW, is that a photo of your band w/ a harp player...If so, what kind of music do you play? Just curious because I have been attempting to teach myself to play harmonica over the past year.

My first band ever about 23 years ago. It was 80's rock and that was just the way he held the mic for certain screams.
Members tlchase68
Fair enough! I am (hopefully) in the process of getting back together with my old band after a 10-year break...We played mostly 80's and 90's covers.
