my old studs are pretty trashed and i have a set of the wilkinson locking ones here. the wilkinson anchors have an o.d. of 10 mm and my old anchor holes are right at 9.5 mm if i use a dial caliper in the ridges left by the old anchors.

does anyone know what size drill bit i should use for the wilkinson anchors?

thank's in advace for any replies

I've found that 0.5mm too small works perfectly (so for a 10mm stud, use a 9.5mmm drill bit). Be careful you don't have shaky hands though, as you'll widen the hole very quickly if you do.

Good trick is to practise on a scrap bit of wood first and see how the stud fits on that.

As irishstu pointed out, you want a little meat left in the hole for the stud to grab into. But, you need to make sure the finish is cut back to the outer diameter of the stud or you are risking a nasty finish crack.

Yes, good point. Never a bad idea to use a countersink bit just to widen the top a mm or so.

What a countersink drill bit looks like (just in case you don't know):

Yeah I learned that one the hard way a few years ago. Fixed it up nicely with some CA, but I think it took a few years off my life.
