Seymourduncan.com is a really great website and they have a free DVD on how pickups are made, what makes them sound different, and so forth.

Right here at Harmony Central. Go to User Reviews/Guitar/Pickups. The number of manufacturers and models is mind-boggling.

I've seen a number of posts suggesting that GFS pickups deliver a lot of bang for the buck.

A higher impedance (Ohms) generally implies a hotter pickup that will produce distortion more easily than a lower impedance. The impedance is simply a function of the wire gage and length of the windings on the pickup. Thinner gage and more windings gives higher impedance. Magnet type and strength make a large difference as well.

If you want pickups that rock try a single coil sized humbucker in the bridge position. I have one (Dimarzio Air Norton S) in two of my Strats (a 79 and an 06 MIM Standard)

I prefer lower ohm Alnico magnet pickups for the other two positions in these Strats (just my opinion). They sound clearer to me and offer up a more traditional Strat tone that you are used to hearing. Get a set where the middle pickup is reverse wound reverse polarity so that you get hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 on you selector switch. I set it up so that it splits the bridge HB with the middle pup in position 2.

I agree that GFS are a good bye for your money. I bought a 92 MIM strat for a backup guitar, put a set of GFS vintage alnico stagger in it for $50 and that included shipping. And they sound good too. You can

GFS pups have my vote as well. Good pups regardless of price. I suggest you really get an idea what sound you want. Be specific. Run songs you want to play in your head. Once you have that contact Jay @ GFS. Get the pups he recommends. Customer service @ GFS is second to none. Do this & you'll be a happy camper.

What pickup configuration do you have in there now? I have always had great luck with EMG's. They are more flexible than most people think, especially with the 18v mod. It really brings them to life.

All three pickups read at 5.2 oms each sooo,..,,, I understand that they are weak and there is a used set down at the guitar shop that say are at 8.2 oms .

I am trying to get a tex mex/ray vaughn/zz topp, thing. Which way should I go to get there ?, or at least that direction .

And what about the oms on the neck, middle and bridge pups

I THINK  it might change on the way. you know ,"IN SEARCH FOR THAT TONE"

Also I don't have any real $$$ so thats why I mentioned shops "USED PUPS"

THANKS inadvance for any help

For the tone your going for, I recommend Fender Texas Specials. Its a starting point, but much of SRV and Billy Gibbons tone comes from what their hands are doing. Your hands and the way you manipulate strings is where your tone is. Also, an old Marshall plexi, or Fender Deluxe cranked up doesn't hurt either.

my lads first guitar was a chino encore guitar,i changed the tuners to grover, fitted to cheap fender mex pickups plus a mid seymour and it rocks and holds tune with a bit of olive oil on the trem & nut total cost 160 ish us dollers, and if he drops it or sombody wants to hit mi over the head with it at a gigg no problem

now all we buy is cheaper range guitars ie ibanez & epiphone & tanglewood and just change the pickups, tuners, wile he can afford to buy his owne Gibsons :thu:

One thing you do have, royce is a guitar that benefits from modification. Most of us here are of the silk purse from a sow's ear school of thought. In a short time I've learned ehough that I'm doing work for other people. I only make enough to buy stuff for my own projects, but I'm having fun doing it. Just wish I had more time to do my own projects.

After reading the above and other post I think I will also have to consider a different (better) bridge and tuners. The fact that the squire stays in tune amazingly well I won't worry about them for now .

Royce I understand your point.

I will only be able make the changes a little at a time for I only have "A PAIR OF DIMES"HA!!

I think change the bridge pup with one that reads 8.2 and leave the others alone for now actually next wk

Is allparts ok brand?, that is what the local shop carries for other parts.
