Need help with Floyd

Hello

I have a licensed Floyd in my Jackson Soloist that is not staying in tune too well. All six strings consistently get a few Hz flat, and the fine tuners eventually can't compensate and I need to remove the nut locks and return up on the headstock. Is this normal? I get it taken in for a setup a couple times a year

There are a few different types of floyds. Some have you lock the string at the bridge and some accept the ball end of the string.

If they take the ball end you may have an issue with the string unwrapping at the ball end causing the strings to go flat. If so,

Take some crazy glue and put it on the ball ends before installing new strings. Be sure to wipe off all excess and let it dry completely.

This will prevent the strings from unwinding and going out of tune.

if the strings get cut off and locked down, they usually have lock plates that pinch the strings. same for the locking nut.

You can remove the plates and roughen them up with sand paper so they grip better in some cases.

The other things are to make sure the neck bolts are tight and the truss is correct.

Last but not least, try a different brand of strings and make sure you stretch them pulling the string at the

12th fret until they no longer go out of tune.

I'm noy a huge fan of floyds Myself. I've had a few different floyd systems and when they get old and worn

they dont maintain tuning any better than a non locking system.

If you wrap your tuning pegs with a locking wrap and lube your nut they work just as well

as any floyd system. Also due to all that metal in the bridge a floyd is very metalic sounding.

The only locking system that I found really works well in my headless Steinberger.

They use a doubble ended ball string and the bridge not only has wide range tuners, you can lock the bridge

with a latch to tune the strings, then when you release it, you can also adjust the spring tension so the string tuning locked and unlocked match. When you arent using the whammy or the strings get old you can lock the bridge down so it remains in tune

like a fixed bridge. Excelent system but even there wear can cause issues.

we have a cheapi ibenez rg320fa i took the brige out poslished the mating surfaces ie the pin area,s then re assambled it with a dash of olive oil on the 2 bridge pins and as long as the spring tension is correct it always holds tune,in my experience is all abought the correct spring tension,i normaly set the guitar tuning in flat then lock the strings at the nut,ie EADGBE and then standard tune up adjusting the spring tension up,with a bit of fine adjustment to finish off on the finger screws.

Try to loosen or tighten the screws on the springs a half a turn each, maybe if the springs are tightned down all the way already you can try shorter springs. It don't need to go in for a tune up twice a year you can adjust it yourself with your tuner. Also Each open string should be the same as on the 12th fret if its off fine tune the little screws for each string.
