I am abandoning my VS 1880 and going computer. what do I need to buy, within reason, to record into my computer? I have a very good computer (pentium 4, 3.2 Ghz, 2 gb ram 2 internal 250 mb hard drives and one 250 mb external drive.)-- I'm looking for info on what type of interface and/or soundcard to put in. and any opinions on what software to start with? I'd like to keep it under a grand if possible.

thanks for the info. I want to record songs with singing and without, like Craig Chaquico. when I do a search, what do I put in to search? seems rather broad I know. I plan on using a program for drums although I play drums and have a digital drum set. I have access to alot of software if that helps.

thanks again.

Well, I guess you could put in "DAW" or "computer recording". You could also whittle it down to a few that seem appealing. Like, which program is appealing to you? Do you need MIDI? That kind of stuff. You can look in catalogues and whittle it down to maybe 5.

If you need mic preamps along with your A/D converters, that PreSonus FirePod, which comes with Cubase LE, seems like it might be a good bet for US$600. There's an M-Box with Pro Tools for less than that. I don't know what else is out there.

Look at catalogues, poke around on Sweetwater or Musician's Friend, do a Google search and see if you can narrow it down a little.

You might want to check out the M-Audio Projectmix I/O. It's essentially an 002 with 4 additional mic pres, that I hear are better than the 002 mic pres. It's downfalls are only 4 analog outs (but you can add up to 8 more via ADAT), and no simultanious ADAT and SPDIF. However it's 1/2 the price of the 002 ($1000 currently but reportedly going up soon) can run M-Powered PTle7 and a multitude of other DAW softwares, and is a pretty killer controller.

I'll be getting one to betatest soon, hopefully this week, and I can't wait. I know I'll be keeping it, I just know....

thanks again. been spending the morning surfing and the presonus firepod looks like the one. I'm not sure if I need midi but I'd hate to have no midi capabilities and then need it. going to the NAMM show this month so I will be able to look into the various systems, although in years past the show can be so overwhelming with so many presentations and choices that you walk out of it spinning. but if I can narrow it down to a handfull then the show won't be as intimidating. will be there the whole time this year. lots to look at. also looking to a boutique amp and there are only about a million of those to see and hear.

again, thanks for the input and direction

If I remember correctly, Craig Anderton did a review of the FirePod and liked it. The price is certainly right if it sounds decent, which I suspect it does.

Where, no simultaneous S/PDIF and ADAT? Can you use the S/PDIF for a hardware reverb unit like you can with the Digi001 ( but not use both to output stereo mixes simultaneously)? Just curious.

NAMM is overwhelming. If you can narrow it down to a few, it'll make it soooo much more manageable.

And if you're talking about boutique guitar amps, they have a ton of them.

Or if it's boutique amps for powering your studio, there's gonna be a few of those around as well.

There's a lot of great boutique guitar amps. Carr and Victoria are two very nice ones, but there's so much more....the noisy NAMM floor is perhaps not the greatest place to truly evaluate how good an amp sounds, but hopefully you can get a decent idea.
