Members djufart
Hey gang. I was hoping you guys could have a listen to a recent drum track I did and give your opinions on the sound. It is on my "myspace" page entitled 'drum solo'. http://www.myspace.com/chesleybryan any insight would be appreciated. This was recorded with a Presonus Firepod using an Audix D6 on the kick, SM57 on the snare and two Studio Project B1 LDC as overheads. ches edit...oops meant to post this as a reply to the thread where we do this type of thing...phil please move it if need be! Members DontLetMeDrown
Sounds like I would expect from the amount of mics used. I prefer the snare louder myself, but that is very subjective. All the tom hits sound far away, well, because they are far from the overhead mics. Close-micing them will let you hear more attack. Members zkaudio
what kinda room did you record in? lot of air on that kit...
Members joestanman
Meh... not bad, but not great. I think you could play around with mic placement a little better, or room ambience. Because you are getting too much air I agree, and not enough drum tone. How high up are those overheads? Not bad for so few mics, and the firepod... but think you could get it better with experimentation. The drums don't have much personality. But, Ill be honest... The drums sound is really the least of your problems man.

What does that mean? BTW... I pretty much agreed with everything you said except for what I understand to be a put down at the end of your post. If I'm wrong I sorry... if I'm right, you should be. It sounds like the drums themselves sound pretty good but you need more direct iinfo. I think maybe your OH's are too far away...?
Members joestanman
I think if someone posts a recording on here for others to evaluate, then everyone should be prepared for honesty. A put down, would be me going out of my way to email him and say "dude you suck..."

If that's it, then you're just being mean, and certainly not helpful. But... OK.

Members djufart
I agree that the kit sounds a little far away. Just ordered some additional mics today so that I can close mic the toms. I think that will add a bit of personality to the kit. The kit is a Premier Genista, which are Birch Shells. As most of you know, Birch drums are a bit more "atackish" (I made up a word). In saying that, I agree that getting some mics in there should make a helluvalot of difference. as for Joe's comment... I'm quite comfortable with my abilities as a drummer. I appreciate the thoughts on the recording nonetheless. ches

Members joestanman
Christ. The drumming on the recordings is fine. The vocals on the other hand were not. The drumming is much better played and recorded than the vocal performance. Thats what im saying.
Members djufart
Gotcha... Hey man, I know I'm no singer. There isn't enough autotune and studio magic in the world to fix that. I just lay down vocal tracks because I'm the only one in the room! I sing so the rest of you guys sound better!! ches

Members joestanman
well then there we go... so tell us about your overhead placement.
Members blue2blue
It's mighty distant. I feel like I'm about 30 feet away near the back wall in a room that's about 20 feet wide with mostly hard walls. (I doubt that's the actual recording environment -- I'm trying to describe the psychoacoustic effect.) The kicks pretty tubby... I'd try some thinning EQ, just a touch, see how it works with whatever bass you might use. As it is, the kick's a bit too big in the mix for my taste... that and the verb/bounce from the snare sound makes the kick sound like it's about 10 feet in front of the kit with a pillow in it. I thought the hat was a little loud. I might tinker with the mic placement next time. But it's got a good beat and it's easy to dance to, Dick. I'll give it an 86.
