Members nobodysweasel
hi guys. so i'm looking for a way to directly record into my computer. before now i've used an old digital four track recorder, then transfered everything to the computer for mixing/effects/etc. i'd like to cut out that extra step, but i'm not really sure what equipment i need. basically all i want is to be able to record at least two tracks (preferably four) simultaneously in adobe audition. i don't need fancy effects or anything, seeing as how i can add those with software. any suggestions? thanks so much. Members blue2blue
Here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAW ... is a very good starting place. You can follow links from the article. It's a great time to be recording on a computer; I think you'll find it really opens up a whole range of possibilities you may have never thought or only dreamed of. (Wave flag here. ) Welcome to the fray!
Members mikepinkerton
You can start cheap with something like an M-Audio mobilePre for $150 (less on eBay) or go with something in the middle like the Presonus Firepod for about $600 (IIRC). I've had both, and both are good units and "just work" out of the box. It's good to start small until you know exactly what you want. That said, the Firepod will allow you to record 4 inputs simultaneously, while the MobilePre only 2. If you do some research here, the Firepod comes highly recommended. -Mike
Members TimOBrien
My obligatory standard reply that I keep in Wordpad: Immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up in your studio: Home Recording for Musicians by Jeff Strong - $15 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764516345/102-9059220-3248917?v=glance&n=283155&%3Bn=507846&%3Bs=books&v=glance (Wish I'd had that when I started; would have saved me lots of money and time and grief) Good Newbie guide that also explains all the basics: http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm 21 Ways To Assemble a Recording Rig: http://www.tweakheadz.com/rigs.htm Also Good Info: http://www.theprojectstudiohandbook.com/directory.htm Other recording books: http://musicbooksplus.com/home-recording-c-31.html Plenty of software around to record for free to start out on: Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net Kristal: http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/ Other freebies and shareware: www.hitsquad.com
