Members halfguard
im thinking of selling my sweetwater creation station (2.53) and getting a mac mini duo. my main reason is so that i can run logic. i would buy logic express and the mac mini. i would run ptle and logic express on the mini untill the new intel towers had all the bugs worked out and then give the mini to my son. by that time i would have a decent hold of logic then upgrade to pro and get one of the intel towers. my question is how much power do you think i would lose. ive got a 2.53 with 1G of ram. the one thing i dont like about the mini is it only has 1 firewire port and i have a 002rack...thanx for any help................... Members gdoubleyou
It's hard to compare cpus directly, but benchmarks I've seen show that the core duo machines outperform last years dual G5 powermacs. http://www.barefeats.com/pbcd.html So you won't be hurting for power. I have a G4 mini that I use as a secondary DAW. I added one of these http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MS2F7500G16/ You could just buy the enclousure and add your own drive. Phil O'Keefe
That mini stack looks cool gdoubleyou - I really like that it acts as a firewire and USB hub, and also holds a 3.5" drive... but the pricetag seems a wee bit steep to me. Close to $300 with no internal drive? halfguard, what's the deal on your Sweetwater machine - is it a single or dual CPU? If it is a single, I would imagine the Mac Mini dual core would be at least as fast. I noticed a significant improvement in CPU horsepower when I went from an Athlon 64 3400 to a Athlon 64 X2 4200. Actually that price is with 500Gb drive included, the empty enclousure is $79 http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_Specials.cfm?ID=8474&Item=NWTFWU2MSV2

Because most of the apps I run are Mac only, it's a no brainer for me. I have a Core duo mini currently in the UPS eco-system, my plans other than a DAW is to use it for web design, and run IE7 on Vista. Looks like the next vesion of IE will do some interesting and unexpected things with CSS. I've been using a Powerbook as my main DAW, and really don't see a need for tower. The mini is virtually noisless when compared to my PC and old G4 tower. The internal drive will be for apps and plugins, gonna turn the G4 mini into a digital jukebox and media center.
