ok so I've been into recording for awhile now, but I've just kinda a cheap mixer and like guitar tracks pro or something heh....sooo I am thinking about making a small studio, but i'm not really sure on where to start in terms of gear, and what is good, but still not TOO expensive. I don't want to spend too much money right away, but i'm taking a recording class at the college im going to now, and i just wanna start something thats not too expensive, but still will sound good.

"Decent" and "Small" are both subjective, I'm guessing.......

Do you want to record with your PC/Mac or on a stand alone recorder?

You will need;

Something to record with.

If it's a Computer, you'll need a sound card or a USB/Firewire audio interface, and a computer, of course.

You'll also need recording software.

A stand alone recorder is just a single box that does everything. There are many styles to choose from, and some have a wide variety of built in effects to choose from.

A microphone so you can get sounds into the recorder.

Maybe you'll need a mic preamp, to deliver your mic some phantom power, or to give it some 'warmth', or whatever.....

Some headphones so you can hear while you're tracking.

And some monitors so you can hear what you've made, and mixdown....

This can all range in price from between 500 dollars to 10,000 dollars, depending on what you want.

I'm still learning all this myself, but I felt sorry for seeing you flounder here ;)

Seriously... There are a lot of people who could help you, but you need to set forward a budget, and the direction you'd like to go.....

Do you already own a Mac that you can use for your studio, or would you have to buy one?

What kind of music are you recording primarily?

What is the purpose of the recorded music (demo, songwriting purposes, something that can compete sonically with very well-recorded commercial releases?)?

Are you micing or doing mostly DI/electronic?

Do you need your studio to be portable?

What is the maximum amount of money you would want to spend on your studio? If, for example, I said that you could build a decent studio for $10,000, would that be something you could do?

Doesn't your recording class have sources of information on recording equipment?

What kind of equipment do you feel comfortable working with already?

Probably mostly rock, metal

Probably demos, probably not to compete with professionals yet

Do you need your studio to be portable?

If you're serious about recording (and if you're even half serious about popping $10K to do it) you should do your own research, rather than just ask a bunch of strangers a blanket "What should I buy?" question. Buy a book or two on the subject. Or just loiter at Borders like I do and read up a little. The guys who have replied so far have put more effort into your quest than you have.

By the way, you could get a pretty bitchin' little set up for $10K. But to make it work for you, you'll have to figure out just what your needs are.
