Members aliengroover
After endless 'Net chatter, it's finally announced: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?langid=100&navid=48&itemid=24691&ref=003A-US It's not at all what anyone speculated, and other than word clock and a few other tweaks, it's basically the same widget as the 002. So what do I have now...? A year or two of software upgrades for my 002R? Eh, I should be good for a while.Peace
Phil O'Keefe
Is that a real jog wheel I see on the 003? And it looks like they used fader caps with a better shape on them than the 002 and Command 8. It also looks like they went with montion sensitive rotary controls ala the ones on the Icon systems. Apparently there is now two headphone outs, with individual level controls. The also reportedly improved the A/D converters and mic preamps. Apparently it can also now serve as a standalone MIDI controller, which will be useful for some folks. No word so far that I can find on the digital outputs and S/MUX at 96 kHz... but there's only one set of ADAT lightpipe I/O ports, so I don't think the I/O has changed otherwise. I have not heard back yet, but I already put in dibs to do the EQ review on it.
Members scapier
It looks cool, but it does seem like a cosmetic upgrade. I wonder if things like the power will be upgraded and the converters will sound warmer. I'm happy to send my 002 to Black Lion and be happy with that for some years to come. Unless, Phil, you find something in your review that makes the new 003 a must must have. Please don't find anything Phil, I'm trying to make a profit in this biz! Members Matt Hepworth
Phil, S/MUX is a definite NO. Stated on Digi under specs - ADAT I/O (48kHz maximum)

Members brandondrury1
I wonder if things like the power will be upgraded and the converters will sound warmer. Warmer converters? That's a new one. My Mytek converters don't sound any "warmer" than my Delta 1010 converters. They do sound quite a bit clearer though. Members scapier
Okay rather than "Less warmer," how about "less brittle."
Members fromthesunset
Well, I can't wait for a review phil. It would be nice to hear an actual point of view... y'know, something other than speculation, cause, OBVIOUSLY none of us have used it yet. We don't know if it is only cosmetic or not, so any other post is pretty much irrelevant until we can hear something official, or at least unofficial... Members fromthesunset
on second review (obviously without touching the unit) it's pretty much the same thing isn't it? Just with a better clock, huh? Looks like a 002 with a black lion mod is still as good as you can do without paying for the apogee package. Unless you're into Nuendo... And if only I didn't go to Full Sail I could do anything but ProTools
Phil O'Keefe
Well, I have told Craig and the Digidesign folks I'm interested in checking it out / writing a review, so hopefully it's in the works. As always, my verdict is out until I can see it, touch it, use it, taste it and hear it. I'll keep you guys posted. PS Thanks Matt - I missed that about the S/MUX the other night. Bummer about that being absent.
Members aliengroover
my verdict is out until I can see it, touch it, use it, taste it and hear it. I hear they'll be good with a little A-1 sauce and a medium-sized Chick-fil-A lemonade. Peace
Members aliengroover
David Gibbons, Senior Director of Product Marketing had this, among other things to say over on the DUC: "Despite these changes, I can see how this intro is disappointing to existing 002 owners who were looking to upgrade to a product that would take them to the next level.
