So this client has four sources --to review his mixes. He, of course, would like all of the CD's ~ to sound alike on each speaker system. Passed fine on all ~~ except the stereo Bose setup. He is very fond of certain drums reaching below 40hz.

Not going to happen. :)

First of all, each speaker has its own characteristics and different variations in their frequency responses, transient responses, etc. Then there's the different acoustical environments; different absorption, reflection and diffusion characteristics in each environment - not to mention the differing modal responses of each of the listening environments, the listener's position within those environments, acoustical cancellation and reinforcement, etc.

The best you can hope for is for it to sound as good as possible in a variety of acoustical environments and on a variety of playback systems... but getting it to sound "the same" on different systems in different rooms is an excercise in futility. :)

Of course, all of that depends on how "picky" you are about what constitutes things sounding "the same".

Thanks Phil & Ethan --YES ..wish more would heed those thoughts > of the "whole package" required to start one on their way :: to transporting your mixes to some standard. At least to help you to eliminate one faulting factor --a untuned room.

As an improvised/cheap sollution (something you might find lying around the house). If you want to mix so it sounds as good on many systems as possible you could use a set of IPOD speakers, some cheap stereo or something comparible.

I had the thought that concidering a lot of people are going to end up listening to your mixes on IPOD speakers/headphones then they might be a worthwhile comparison tool. I would however think there is a lot of differnet opinions on how much you should mix for a flat system vs mix to many systems (inclusing poor ones).

I use the Apple SPeakers B0b @ Gateway suggests ;)...I think in this situation it must be the 4subs ( the Bose generally have one per) Bose had a huge demo/party > at this studio in Big Sur ..think they left him with 4 pairs of everything.

Yeah, sure, but where are the bass traps?
:D

Have you ever done a waterfall plot of your space at bass frequencies?

--Ethan

Waterfall ? --you know how we are always on water restrictions in California..I can't even have a lawn..all goes to the golf courses:evil:

Hodas was in town around May --but, we did not meet this time. We are making structural changes at the studio soon..might be a good thing to have some tech ears back in.....
