Black lion Signature series

I took the leap and got my Digi 002 Rack upgraded to the Signature series.

I don't consider myself an expert, but i really like what i hear. I spent a good amount of time with the 002 and the mod really made me a happy guy.

I would describe the mod as a more focused overall sound with more depth. I have been paying lots of attention to the 4 mic pres and they sound really great.

I can't compare this to other systems since i don't have anything else to compare to. I have spent time working in a HD studio but it was a different room, different monitors, etc.

What I'd like to understand is the difference between the tweakhead and the signature mod, can you unpack that for me? I have the tweakhead and love it, but should I send it back for the up upgrade?

Per Black Lion it's basically a new clock and a complete recap of the entire analog signal path with high grade capacitors.

I am really pleased with the upgrade. I have been using the 002 pre's quite a bit. Yesterday i recorded acoustic guitar with a Cascade x-15 stereo ribbon mic and just loved the sound. I had to peg the gain and get kind of close to the mic

5-8 inches but it was really big with no apparent noise.

i'm having the sig mods done as i write. up til now i've been using an Echo layla for my converter, but i the modded 002 gets me a better converter + 4 decent pre's. so i just scooped up a used 002 and sent it immediately in for mods. my buddy/bandmate had the same mods done and is thoroughly pleased, i heard some clips he made and it sounded ridiculously good--very open/spacious and 3D with a ton of detail. i'm so excited for it--

oh, i also upgraded the already upgraded pre's so that they'll have some extra headroom, in case i'm ever close mic'ing my hiwatt and need some extra.

Got my 003R back. Had some time to set it up and run it through the paces a little....:thu: The increase in overall quality with the Signature mod is a significant leap over the Tweakhead (which was well worth it...) I had done last year. Excellent detail and depth. Did a few quick acoustic tracks and the mic pres are noticeably improved, easily on par with the MS1B but more lush sounding. Overall the thing slams. :D I've got a band coming in towards the end of the week, I can't wait to push a full project through it.

I had a 002R, a 002 Console, a 003 factory console, and sold the 003 to go back to try a BLA sig modded 002R. Let me tell you, this thing sounds more round and punchy than some 2 inch tape setups I have used. Very impressed. Deff. get the sig mod. It is worth every penny.

I have the 002R which I am thinking of sending in for the BLA sig mod. My concern is that I use the ADAT on the 002R for an additional 8 channels in. I read some things that said using ADAT for audio and word clock is not good. Maybe I don't understand, but when I get the signature mod - will it add external wordclock connectors to it?

Should I worry about this since now my 002R (after the mod) will have a better clock and be the Master instead of slave?

Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a 002 / 002R, and use an external A/D converter or multi-mic preamp with ADAT lightpipe digital out, you pretty much have to set the 002 to slave to the embedded word clock in the incoming lightpipe signal. There is no BNC word clock I/O on the 002, but they're there on the newer 003's.

I'm not certain, but I highly doubt that the BLA mods add them to the 002's.

However, I used to use a 002 with the digital I/O all the time, and while it's not as good as running with the internal word clock, or a good external clock, it works fine.

Since the questions about how to set up / use the digital I/O on Pro Tools systems comes up fairly often on this forum, I made a YouTube video in an attempt to explain the basics of how to set things up.

On a side note - I wonder if BLA is ever going to offer mods for the HD interfaces?

I have an 002 with just their "HD" mod. I love it. I've been wanting to get a 003r and have it modded with the sig mod to compare. Plus I don't like the cable clutter I get with the 002. Anywho I guess I'm just sayin I'm a believer.
