Type of cable to use from interface to powered monitors?

Dumb question, I know. But for an interface (I have a Duet coming) to powered monitors, speaker cable or instrument cable? When I used a Korg portastudio I was using speaker cables but someone told me I was supposed to use something else for active speakers.

You want a balanced cable, not speaker or instrument. I think the outputs on a Duet are XLR, right? If they are you can probably use a regular XLR-to-XLR cable (a mic cable, in other words) to feed your powered monitors. If your monitors have 1/4" inputs you'll need an XLR(female)-to-1/4" cable, which you can pick up at most decent music retailers. You can certainly order them online from Musicians' Friend, Sweetwater, or any of a myriad of other dealers. :)

Cool, thanks. The Duet outs are 1/4".

Cool. In that case you'll need either a balanced 1/4" cable (also called a TRS cable) or a 1/4" to XLR (male) cable, depending on what sort of connector your monitors have. :)

Yep I'd def use balanced cables, either TRS>XLR or TRS>TRS. However I thought I saw where the Duet had unbalanced outputs, and just looked it up here. So in that case would balanced cables help? Sorry not trying to add to the confusion.

With powered speakers, you definitely do NOT want to use unshielded "speaker cables" - regular balanced TRS 1/4" or XLR cables, or unbalanced 1/4" or RCA coax cables is what you want; with the connector types being dependent on the I/O of your interface and the inputs of your monitors.

According to the page you linked to the Duet has:

Two unbalanced -10 dBV line outputs for powered speakers

So there really isn't any benefit to using balanced cables. Regular 1/4" "guitar" cables will work; assuming the inputs on your powered monitrs are also 1/4". If they're XLR inputs, you'd need 1/4" to XLR cables. If they inputs on your monitors are RCA, then you'd need 1/4" to RCA cables.

Any of the above should be available via your local Guitar Center or favorite online music retailer, such as Musicians Friend or Sweetwater.

Yeah that's what I was getting at. I was surprised the Duet doesn't have balanced outputs. I first noticed this when reading about reading about a box someone sells to replace the stock fan-out cable. (Mercenary Audio maybe?) Anywho just pointing out that it doesn't have balanced outs.
