Members Cheese Grits
I've got a couple of Oktava microphones in my mic locker (one MK219 and one MK319), and I'd like to send them off to Michael Joly at Oktavamod for modding. I'm trying to get a sense of whether the premium electronics upgrade really makes much difference over the standard modification. Does anyone know anything that might help me decide whether to spend the money for the premium components? Thanks in advance.
Phil O'Keefe
Have you asked Michael? I have not had any of his mods done yet - I keep meaning to send him a pair of MC012's to mod, but always seem to either forget or don't get around to it. But he appears to know what he's doing... Members Cheese Grits
I sent him an email a while back, and he sent me a helpful reply. Still, he has a vested interest, so I just wanted to see if people here had any relevant experience to share. I have no doubt, for example, that my 219 could be a much better sounding microphone with the standard physical modifications. I just wonder how much more the premium electronics would add. I suspect almost nobody on the planet has done the kind of controlled a/b testing that would produce meaningful results though. I should just bite the bullet and do the PE mod. In for a penny, in for a pound I guess.
Members I was The Funk
I have modded mc-012's and a modded 319. I actually bought a 2500 from ebay which was DOA so Michael wouldn't mod it. Get them modded. Go for the premium. My 319 was in tha back of my closet getting no use and now its by far my best vocal mic. I've also used it on piano for a vintage sound, acoustic guitar, and percussion. Its a colored mic but its really brilliant.
