Members gregovertone
my buddy has a sony dmx100r. he's been rockin' adats since the 90's. the sony has 4 adat cards that have their i/o through lightpipe. he wants to make the switch to the computer world. can he get something like the presonus firestudio lightpipe, and run the the lightpipe OUT from the console into the lightpipe IN of the firestudio? in the same vain, back to the console? i just wanted to make sure things are kosher for him. Phil O'Keefe
I use the ADAT lightpipe outputs on my Digidesign 96 I/O units to connect to my Yamaha 01V96 digital console, and it works great. The only caveat is that lightpipe on his Sony may only support 24 bit / 44.1 - 48 kHz, so if he wants to run a higher sample rate (88.2 / 96 kHz), he'll need to make sure that both his Sony AND the interface he gets support S/MUX, which allows you to run at up to 96 kHz, but will only carry 4 channels of audio over each of the lightpipes as opposed to the usual 8 channels. Other than that, he should be good to go. I can't imagine running ADAT decks these days... sure, I did too back in the day, but they were not without their share of mechanical issues. A good computer system is probably not only going to be better sounding and more capable overall, but more reliable too.
Members gregovertone
thanks phil! that's the main reason for the transition. mechanical inconsistencies. lots. i think he's ok with staying at 48. good news
Members gregovertone
next question..... can the console sync with the daw via mtc or smpte? perhaps via the midi i/o on the interface?
Phil O'Keefe
I don't see why not... I'd be extremely surprised if the Sony doesn't support MTC. Actually, I'm pretty sure it does.
Members gregovertone
does that just sync via midi? (obviously, this is a touch out of my realm).
Phil O'Keefe
MTC is essentially SMPTE being carried / transmitted over a MIDI cable. He'll want to use that, or actual SMPTE, in order to lock the DAW and the console's automation together. It's actually easier than it sounds...
