FMR Audio RNC and RNLA for stereo sum

I'd like to use the RNC and the RNLA for the stereo sum of my mixes. to achieve control and a bit of loudness. what order would you choose?

i thought to do it like this: first the RNC with 25:1, fastest attack and release, gain reduction 1-2 dB to achieve limiting, than the RNLA for compression and a bit of coloring with gain reduction 1-2 dB, ratio 1,5:1, middle attack and release, to achieve some glue.

your opinion?

I have no idea how it would sound, but I'm a fine of using two compressors instead of one to achieve a more "natural" (less artifacts, in other words) sound rather than one compressor working "harder". I also like both of those compressors, so you should be able to get something that you like through some experimentation.

I'd try "flipping" that order - RNLA for compression and color, followed by the RNC in SuperNice mode, but there's no reason not to try both and see what sounds best to you.
:)

You can (and should) try whatever you want of course, but the problem with this is that in supernice mode, the RNC won't function as a limiter (if that's what you want). It's way too slow.

Just try a bunch of different combinations. It'll be different for every song you use it on, but after a while you may find something that works best for you.

Personally, the only compressors I use on the master are a multiband (Voxengo Soniformer actually, so more like 'dynamic EQ') and a brickwall limiter (as transparent as possible) for loudness. Neither achieves a traditional 'compressed' sound, because I don't think that sounds good on the master (I have tried a handful compressors though, including my RNC).

Perhaps that's right, but with the combination of the two compressors working in tandem - the SuperNice mode being essentially three compressors in series on top of that - it's quite possible that you could achieve ratios of 10:1 anyway, which is what limiting technically is. And regardless of whether it is 8:1 or 12:1 or whatever, the most important part in the end is whether it sounds the best for the music.

I'm not sure I'd use either for a brickwall limiter, especially the RNC.

Well, there's that. I don't prefer to, although the RNC in the past has made a perfectly serviceable limiter in SuperNice mode when you simply set the ratio above 10:1. It sounds quite good doing that.
