Monitors advice

Hello there.

I am looking to buy a pair of monitors.

Looking in the 400-600$ range.

I have been recommended to buy a pair of Mackie MR5.

The MR5-MkII is coming out so I guess I should wait a bit.

Would you recommend them?

If not, what would be better.

Thanks for helping a noobie! hehe

I'm sorry - I've never heard the Mackie MR5's, so I can't comment about them. :idk:

I have a pair of (discontinued) ADAM A5's (replaced by the A5X in their product line) that I use for "mobile" use with my laptop, and they do pretty well on the bottom, but IMO, most 5/5.5" woofers are just too small to give you decent bass response; mixing on such systems can lead to a tendency to over-boost bass levels in an attempt to compensate for that missing bass, which can lead to bass-heavy mixes. In general, I recommend 6.5" bass drivers (woofers) or larger for nearfield mixing, although if the Mackies do as well at reproducing the bottom as the A5's do, you can probably learn to compensate and adjust, and still manage to get good sounding mixes out of them.

Thank you. I'll do more research.

I know that they are recommended for my purpose by a few friends and my local store (mr5)

And I also know that Mackie do a MR8...So I guess they would be a little more appropriate if I want to dig into mixing a bit more....

Thanks for your help.

The clarity and depth of the M-Audio CX5 are addictive. I can sit in my studio (okay, basement) and listen to Beatles for hours. The woofers are 5". If you prefer more bass, the KRK Rokits are very popular with the hip-hop crowd.

I mix with Mackie MR8's and absolutely adore them. I feel that they are fairly neutral overall, and they have adjustments for hi/low cut/boost on the back to correct for a bad room (like mine). My friend mixed his record on MR5's and he did a great job too.
