So... please tell me about iTunes...

Yes, Apple has suckered me in... :D I got a 4 GB iPod Nano as an impluse purchase yesterday... however, in reading over the "read me" stuff on the software disk, I'm a bit concerned...

I'd LIKE to install the software on my DAW computer. That way, if I have a rough mix I'm working on that I'd like to load into the iPod and take with me, I can easily do so.

However, I'm concerned that iTunes will "take over" my computer, and prevent me from using the files outside of iTunes. That would definitely NOT rawk from my POV... I would still need to be able to use those files in Sound Forge or PT or Windows Media Player whatever... and from what I read on the Apple software CD, iTunes prevents you from using the files on other programs or making a copy of somethig and sticking it on your iPod. Huh?

Or am I just missing something here?

Advice and suggestions appreciated. :) I'd like to start playing with my new toy, but 'm not sticking that software on my 'puter until I have a better idea of how everything works. :)

Nope. It has a thing that prompts you:

"iTunes has detected that it is not the default media player on this computer.

Click here to make iTunes the default media player...

Do not show this message again..."

So you can click it to disable that from bothering you every time you launch iTunes.

My gripe with iTunes is that their oldies library lacks a bit.

I didn't have any problem saving CoolEdit Pro files to my iPod. It took a little for me to understand how, but once I did, it was a snap.

Well, that's good to know.

Well I do recall you mentioning that Tedster... but it can't completely blow, because my dad is apparently infatuated with iTunes and has been purchasing lots of stuff... unless he's a closet Good Charlotte fan and I just didn't know about it.
;):D
But I'm not too worried... I am not a fan of data compression (although I hear AAC sounds pretty good), so I will probably tend to purchase traditional CD's and then convert the files I want to be "mobile" over to the iPod, more often than I'll use the iTunes store.

And I assume you can still open them in CEP as well as other media players on your computer?

Thanks for the info bud!

I drop roughs into my ipod all the time via itunes and have never had an issue with it taking over. In fact, I have the same itunes library on both my laptop(which I use alot for editing and remote recording) and the studio desktop. Now, one thing that I'm sure you know Phil, is I am a Mac user, NOT PC, but I don't think that is a factor here.

I've got a 40gb gen 3, and it's great. It's my backup drive for all my biz/personal computer needs, so I've got a safety all the time, as it is always with me along with the laptop. I've used it to transport PT sessions and files, to backup live recordings, I use the calendar and address book functions extensively via iSync, I keep notes on it...it's a great tool. I'm not sure if the nanos can do all the added features though.

Come ON folks, I know I am getting impatient here, but I wanna play with my new toy!
:D

Hmmm. I would imagine Ted's got it right. I'm on my G5, so I have no idea what it would present you with on the PC. I don't even know how you would designate a default program on the PC (it's real easy in OS X).

When you rip a file into iTunes it converts to what you've set in the prefs (mp3, aac, wav, aiff...). When I want to open something in another program I can convert to whatever I need and use it freely (or, if it's already in the desired format, I simply drag a copy to a new folder).

Besides, if you use iTunes to play your various files it will build them into your library and allow you quick and easy lookups (no more digging through folders). It will play and convert all formats you need except WM files.

Also - your DAW machine isn't online, so you'll have no store available.

Have fun with your toy...

You'll be fine. I run ITunes on my DAW, often with it open at the same time as the DAW software. I'll do roughs, drag them into the IPod, and listen to them in the car (I have a car connection for the IPod).

Don't confuse ITunes (the Apple music store) and ITunes (the Mac/PC application). "Fairplay" rights management applies only to songs that you buy from the Apple music store. You CAN use it on a limited number of devices (certainly more than one), and burn (I think) 5 CDs from music you bought.

Anything that you create yourself or rip from your own CDs doesn't have Fairplay added to it, so no worries.

BTW, if you're new to ITunes, you may not be familiar with AAC compression. It's much better than MP3 at the same bit rate. But Windows Media Player doesn't support AAC. You also have lossless compression available as well.

Thanks for all the responses everyone... I guess I'll quit being a wuss and give it a go... after I finish my session this afternoon. :)

Dylan, don't worry buddy.... while I might have purchased a Mini for my wife if they had come out about a month earlier (before I built her internet machine), I'm not likely to replace my AMD system with anything... except maybe a AMD X2 64 system! :D

. Once you move to the Apple Cult there is no turning back, my friend. Next thing you know you'll be selling your nice homebrew AMD systems for a stack of Mini Mac's
:D
...

ahhh that would be tragic since the minimacs have no balls.
