I wake up at 5:45 because my son, Sam, has to be at school by 7:15.

I get up and make him eggs and toast for breakfast, and then make him a sandwich to take to school, and he drives himself to school because he's seventeen, and almost a man now, oar so he thinks, and then I don't see him until nine at night sometimes because he's at lacrosse practice, or I'm doing something, and then.....it's another day, and I'm up at 5:45, again, and making eggs.....

I love that kid.

Everyday I wake up at 6 and take the train into work. At my desk, with coffee in hand, at precisely 7:10 I call home to wake the girls. My daughter Tyler 9, and my wonderful wife Lisa.

If for some reason I'm forced to miss making that call it feels like the world is sideways for a day.

I love those guys.

Every day, I wake up at a slightly different time, but it almost always ends up being 6:15 and 7:00. Then I shower and put clothing on myself, in that order, and then I march across the street to get coffee.

Then I walk back, and work a little bit, and then I might get my son dressed for school and attempt to feed him something. Then I make sure his homework is done and his teeth and hair are brushed.

And then I walk him to school, and come back, and work some more.

And then, later, I walk down to the school and pick him up, and we might get an ice cream on the way back.

And then I keep working, interspersed with internet posting and general meandering, until 10:00 or 11:00 at night. At various points, I eat, and occasionally use the bathroom, or talk on the phone to a friend, or even pick up an acoustic guitar and do renditions of '70s soft rock.

But that's about it. Then, I go to sleep. I like sleep.

Everyday I get up around noon. Depending on how late I stayed up the night before (and if any drinking was involved) that can stretch a few hours, but I never work before 3:00 PM.

Sometimes I'll wake up early and work on some personal projects (mixing, soldering, etc) but I usually save it for the wee hours.

Every day I get up around 9.00 and bring Ould Blackpig (the Da) his breakfast in bed. Then I get my own and fart around the house until about 12.30 when I drive him down for his daily ritual at the pub and betting shop. The afternoons are spent doing more farting around while Ould Blackpig watches the horse racing on the tv. Then Mrs. Blackpig gets home from school and I make something for her as otherwise all she will eat is toast with coffee. I never have a set ritual for working; I try and do any recording late at night as my "studio" is in the back bedroom and the traffic noise gets through. Evening time is spent cooking, eating and drinking wine. I had a gig last week where I played guitar on stage for the first time in ages and I was shocked at how rusty my playing had become (I usually play the bouzouki). Starting today I'm going to practice my guitar for an hour every day. I'm also going to get back into the piano lessons. Maybe someday I will even figure out how MIDI works...

Every morn I wake up by 7:30. I feed the wife and the boy and then get the boy (and oftentimes the neighboor's boy) on the bus. Then I take up station at this computer and try to figure out what is going on with my employers, who are in another state and sometimes don't contact me for days or even weeks at a time but who keep my promising that this life of uneasy, idle luxury will end imminently, and that I'll rue the day I actually asked if there was anything for me to do...

The job is very confuising, but I've achieved a zen calm about it, recognizing that it is almost certanly an ephemeral situation, and that I should enjoy (and save!) the income while it lasts before I inevitably return to my true vocation as what they used to call a "cobbler" in the depression era -- someone who does a little bit of this and that and cobbles a living together.

There is time for music everyday, right now mostly songwriting and working out my new Larrivee L-05 (thx, new job).

Boy is home by 3:30, wife within and hour. The evenings are band practices, radio shows, karate for the wife and boy.

And that's life, and it is good.

If my son's old enough to drive to school,...danggg than he's old enough to fix breakfast and lunch too.

No, no. I loooooooove the sleep. I'm usually in bed by 11:00, unless I'm really busy working in which case it could go to midnight, or beyond if I'm getting ready for a show like NAMM.

But I really do try for 6-8 hours every night. Any less and I become an unbearable bitch.

The exception is if I have a gig and roll in at 3:00am, but I pay the price for that these days... even if I sleep in the next day, it takes awhile to recover. I've become a sleep wuss now that youth has passed me by like a Corvette on a freeway.

When he first got his car back in September, I would let him wake up by himself, and get ready and leave, but after about a week, it just seemed wrong, to let him go out without saying anything, or doing anything for him. He might look like a man, and act like a man most of the time, but I know he still needs me.

But, you probably had brothers and sisters, didn't you? My son is an only child, and I've always been the primary care giver for him, so it just seemed too weird to me to let him get up in the dark, and take off without a word from anyone.

Then, he goes to school, has a part time job, plays sports, hangs out with his friends. Sometimes that time in the morning is the only time I get to see him, so I'm happy to do it.

I'm kind of worried about him right now also. I'm afraid he's taken on too much, and he's not getting enough rest. He still needs me, a lot more than he'll admit.

I actually never got the whole american - baking pancakes and orange juice kinda thing in the morning.

I've never met a dutch family who gets up at 5:30 to do that.

We allways laugh when we see the whole breakfast ritual in American movies,...kids drinking only half a glass of juice or milk before running out to get the bus to school,.....

Every one in our family had different times to get out of bed and we all had breakfast at different times too.

So, you have family time at night then, I guess? You don't eat meals together? I don't get what you're saying.

That's the only time I get to see my son, so yeah, I'm gonna do that. I don't think it has anything to do with being American, or not.

Every day, I head over to the balcony, and contemplate the beauty of the Mediterrean lapping the beach below my villa on the Italian riviera. Then the maid comes in, bringing a dish of fresh fruit and a perfectly brewed double cappucino.

My daughter knocks on the door. "Hey Dad, I was listening to some of your new CDs, so I took the liberty of organizing them and ripping them to your portable player. Hope you don't mind."

Then I wake up.

I wasn't talking about your specific situation. It is what we allways see in documentaries and movies. A kitchentable with the whole family gathered around.Pancakes, cornflakes etc etc. That is not in our culture here. We do have breakfast but everyone gets up at his own time and eats after showering.

When we all get home there's a familydinner. Mum cooks and the kids and dad and mum eat. There's no tv dinners here. We sit at the family table and have our familytime.

I understand why you get up early to have breakfast with your son. I guess here it's turned around I guess.

Funny thing is that when you are having breakfast with your son,...at the same time I'm a few thousand miles away having dinner with mine.

The family thing is what we both have,we just have it at different moments of the day.

Breakfast with Family is reserved for sundays here.
