Questions about guitar speakers

It might seem strange me asking this here instead of over in the guitar area but I don't want to get lost in the fanatical gear lust or metal bias.

As I mentioned in another post I got myself a sweet little 15watt Vox. I recorded it last night and it's great... but I want an ext. cab for a couple of reasons. First so I can keep the amp in the control room and still mic a the cab in an ambient environment, and 2nd, for a bigger sound than the included 8" is giving me. So...

... for that chimey thing, nice ringing chords like Free, Bad Co, Townsend, with perhaps a bit more sparkle (think the Matrix productions radio rock guitar pop, etc.) what would you recommend?

I'm thinking a 1x12" cab. But loaded with what? Or maybe I want something different like a 2x12, etc. Any studio guitar gurus want to shine your wisdom my way?

My personal favorites are JBLs & EVs.

I don't have any of their guitar cabs, but I do have a pair of their PA loudspeakers I got before they decided to stop making them and concentrate on guitar and bass cabs.

Absolutely a great sounding pair of 15" PA loudspeakers and I figure they are bit tougher to build than a guitar cab so i don't hesitate to recommend them. Never had anyone call me an ass for doing that so they must be happy with the ones they bought too.:p

I'll bet you must be a Kossoff fan, Lee.

Provoked by this thread I just put on Backstreet Crawler and I'm gonna go grab a couple favorite Free tunes into the playlist in a sec.

I have to say if I believed in jealousy (envy is a fool's errand), I'd be jealous, a bit, of your Vox score. But I know what the answer to that is... prowling ebay, etc, and being prepared to act; hard work pays off.

OK. I'm a little jealous, anyhow.

A lot of the folks down in the amp forum are recommending Weber speakers. Apparently these are hand built, and if you can't find the speaker you want just by reading the descriptions on the web site, you can email Ted Weber and he'll point you in the right direction.

What Khan said! :thu:

Much less expensive than the Celestion Blue. I have not tried the Eminence Red Fang, but it's supposed to be similar to the Weber and the Celestion Blues, so if you have the opportunity to try one out, you might want to give it a go too.

A big plus 1 for Avator and Weber. I hope Avator makes a 1x12 cab soon! Maybe they have, but that is/was their only short coming in my books. As for Weber, the Bluedog is the st*t for Vox tone, but the Silverbell may also be good for classic rock. Also in the power range of that Vox, two other ideas maybe, the Celestion 25watt Greenback or the Bogner cube.

Hope that helps,

PS

I like metal, but the Free make everything all right now, in my books;)

I have a bunch of weber speakers, including the alnico blue dog (a very sweet speaker indeed).

For your amp i would suggest you consider 2 things; one is the wattage of the speaker, i would say keep the speaker wattage real low if possible so you can marry the speaker break up with the amp break up.

The other thing is the difference between the alnico versions and the ceramic versions.

The ceramics are harder and brighter and louder and have less give when you hit them with hard picking, the high end breaks up in a more grainy way than the alnicos.

Alnicos are smooth and sweet to the extent the rest of the speaker design will allow.

Both types are equally cool it just depends what you are looking for.

If you get a new weber remember you'll need to play it a bunch to break it in to get it sounding it'd best.

The signiture 12 might be a good call.

I have 2 alnico sig 10's and they have great character.

True dat:)

The last time I looked I thought they sold Weber. And, their prices are very good with the speaker, too bad it can't be a Weber. I pretty much only buy Weber now, unless I happen apon some good vintage stuff for the right price or need 'big' power.

Eminence makes some monster wattage speakers. I bought a 400 watt LF15, and it does handle 400watts, all by itself:eek:

Nothing really sounds close to a low powered amp cranked into a Alnico Weber IMO, except maybe Celestion Century. But one of those cost more than some small amps!
