Do We Really Need Another Star Trek Movie?

Apparently Paramount will be releasing another Star Trek movie, directed by the guy who produced Alias and Lost. Supposedly it will concentrate on the early days of Spock and Kirk, so I guess that implies a new cast...

So how do you feel about this? Choose the poll option that most accurately reflects your feelings.

As a big fan as I am, id really be happy to see something with more creativity than successive series and two hour long episodes.

Im actually a huge classic fan, more so of the original cast movies..

regardless, anything "new" and not regurgitated rick berman would be awesome.

Why they chose to do enterprise over giving Takei a shot, I dont know.. just digging their own grave deeper I suppose

if it's good, it's good. if it's not, i don't think it'll affect things much. alienating some hardcore trekkers isn't necessarily an awful thing. especially if it creates a new generation of fans. only sad thing would be if it was recreated as something that completely disregarded the older works in style. being standard hollywood action sci-fi or something like that. i'd rather it stuck with the mood of the past works and failed, really.

i was a little disappointed to hear that it's a prequel being worked on. besides being a fan of the next generation more than anything else, it'd be nice to see something that added some to the universe. that doesn't have to be something at the end of the timeline, and it's possible with chibi-spock (and kirk), but i dunno . . .

+1 to Lost...

-1,000,000 to Alias.

Alias was such a good show but I stopped watching when it took that crazy turn with zombies in Moscow.

Hopefully, it willl be well thought out and delivered. But I think a prequel is a mistake...

hmm, perhaps it will take a look at it from the variant "Spock + Kirk" fanfic angle

To boldly go...to Brokeback Nebula

"Denial ain't just a system in the Egypt sector Mr. Girlfriend...take a hint from warp space and don't pretent to be straight. The holodeck is NOT a closet"

Is George Takei exec producer?

if it is a young kirk and spock deal, it's most likely a movie version of the "academy days" series that got scrapped in favor of enterprise.

It may very well be a "test the waters" sort of thing; if it comes to fruition.

They probably dont want to take another chance on a series after after the relative flops of enterprise / voyager.

Ah "Academy Days"...;)

Soapy young men in the shower, wet towels snapping firm buttocks into a bright pink

Kind of a 2 hour long Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse of the Heart" riff

JTK : "Scott, transport me now!!"

MS : "I'm giving it all she's got Jimmy, but the containment field is barely hanging on..it's like we're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks!"

If they could:

1) Stop plastering plastic goop all over peoples faces to make 'aliens' - - gawd, it's not even as good as the old Dr. Who makeup!

2) Let Shatner & Nimoy sit it out & take a break

3) Get some really great writing, maybe grab some of the people who work on the new Outer Limits series

4) NOT milk it to death as a series afterwards

then I'd watch it.

I consider myself a SciFi and Fantasy buff, ever since reading my first SF book back when I was about 9 years old (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) and am offering my erudite opinion here:

It's all in the writing...

Without it, all hope is lost, and the matter/anti-matter pods will implode and take the universe with it, drowning us in a Black Hole of epic proportions, returning us to the pre-Big Bang moment and forcing us to crawl out of the primordial soup once again in our never-ending quest for Truth, Justice and the American Way. (Oops, I think I mixed Superman into the equation).

------- My Ratings -------

Kirk and the Boys --- Campy but very good

Next Generation --- the Best of the lot

Deep Space 9 --- should have been left out in Deep Space

Voyager --- I grew to like it

Enterprise --- tired, in need of Geritol, a bottom feeder

MVP Characters:

Kirk, Spock, Data, Q, the Holographic Doc on Voyager

------- Additional SciFi Comments ------

Babylon 5 was excellent, top shelf

The new Battlestar Gallactica is near the top of the heap

I never liked the Star Wars Saga --- too cartoonish

----- Let's Not Forget Lord of the Rings -----

I read the 4 book series about 4 complete times over the years, hence: I thought the first movie was the best by far, the 2nd fair, and the tertiary epic (Oscar winner) disappointing. While I did enjoy them on an overall basis, the final straw was when the little fellows returned to the Shire and it was green and flowery and untouched by the war with the dregs of Mordor; with the wee Hobbit folk going about their business as if their only worries were still whether there would be enough cake to gorge on in the afternoon.

And why was Gandalf so ordinary in the Return of the King? He wielded a sword more like a typical soldier and used none of his Wizard-like powers that made him, well ... Gandalf!

Jackson claims that he would not be adverse to filming The Hobbit. I think I might actually enjoy that one more than the Trilogy Movies, which while entertaining in many ways, left me yearning for a bit more of the books' details.

I wish they'd make a Janeway motion picture, where (the last show) they emerged from the Borg conduit but that really wasn't earth. The Borg chick had some mind control thing and...

Any ways ya a Voyager motion picture.

that'd be cool.

I'm really bored with Kirk and Spock.

Let them enjoy their royalties

;)

This thread strikes me as an interesting phenomenon.

We're basically judging the value of a work of art (or, at least, a work of craft) before its public release, as if it were a dinosaur rock band announcing its tenth final tour.

Is Star Trek the Rolling Stones of film series?

Let's suggest that they write a movie about a dying planet.

Apparently some 300 years ago the inhabitants freed themselves from the drudgery of manual labor with new technology. The generations following all became artists and musicians. Somewhere approximately 20 years ago all of the technology started to break down. The inhabitants know nothing of planting food , farming, or manufacturing etc. The machines did that for them. THEY ONLY KNOW HOW TO MAKE MUSIC AND PAINT PICTURES !

WHAT WILL THEY DO ??

The real problem with Star Trek is that there hasn't been much in the way of new ideas since TNG. It really got stale. If they can do it without Rick Berman and his crew then that would be a big improvement. The way they concluded Voyager and Enterprise was disappointing at best.

I am not pleased to hear that it will be a prequel. I'm not that interested in seeing any versions of Spock or Kirk that aren't played by Nimoy and Shatner.

I think an expansive trilogy affecting the Star Trek universe (ie, cast members from DS9, TNG, & Voyager) would be a great idea. They could certainly stand to kill off some well known characters as well. A large scale civil war between Federation members or an entirely new enemy would be great.

I'd be willing to give it a shot.

It was a supreme act of faith, after seeing the first Star Trek movie and yawning all the way thru it, to shell out samoleans to see Wrath of Khan. I was skeptical, to say the least. Imagine my surprise to find myself standing and cheering at the end of the movie along with everyone else in the theater.

I'll give this one the benefit of the doubt. Why not? NOTHING could be worse than the first Star Trek movie. Why, I'm getting drowsy just typing it here!

:bor: :bor: :bor:

Wha...?

Get panned from the Sci-Fi community for riffing Forster...again (remember "givers of pain and delight"?)
