Just got back from Remix Hotel:NYC

Normally, the things they show at Remix Hotel are typically available in stores - even if they haven't been covered in magazines yet.

Cakewalk was showing Kinetic 2 - kinetic being a beatbox type of program at about $80. What makes K2 so special is the fact that you can use the sampler to import different types of samples - REX in particular, plus some other formats. The UI has been improved and it seems to be sort of a "reason lite" now. Great deal for $80. I also asked about Sonar 6 - the reps said it will be out in the fall and will be a great upgrade from S5 - I'm thinking they will add more effects and synths inot the box, possibly video support too. I think it will put Cubase another step behind when it comes out in another 3 or 4 months.

M-audio was showing their new dual 6" monitors (aren't available yet) - very good sounding, yet tremedous bottom end (and tight too), plus digital ins and outs - another good contender in the $1,000 to $1,200 monitor arena. One thing that blew me away (it is available) is the Axiom keyboards - they had the 49 key on display and it absolutely rocks. 8 pads like the trigger finger, 8 rotary knobs, 9 sliders, and a useful display (not the typical 2 digits) and aftertouch make this one scream bargain.

Sony was showing Acid Pro 6 - which now is up to DAW standards - even more control over looping and even more features for audio (of course it has full MIDI support in AP6).

Apple was there - I don't really care about the machines, it was mobbed anyway.

Access was there with the Virus TI - skipped that one too.

There were some other manufacturers there too - one had a perfect Quasimidi Sirius sitting there next to theri product; of course I ignored their product (and their name apparently too). Pioneer DJ/VJ was there. Denon DJ was there. Discmakers was there.

All in all, it was ok - no free music CDs or even a freebie bag this year - guess the budget is slim for '06.

I went at 12:30 on Friday (the day it opened) and there was a line to get in; but by 1:45 the place was empty. Of course, it was Friday and it runs Fri to Sun - so you know it will be jammed on the weekend days.

I think that there were less exhibitors there this year than the past two - for instance Steinberg/Yamaha wasn't there this year at all; neither was there a vendor to buy equipment. All in all I think that the equipment is out there for people to play with and make some decisions.

However, it was almost all hip-hop oriented (to be expected in NYC), and that in itself limits the products that vendors are going to bring in. I didn't sit in on any panels (which weren't full) during my time there.

I just think the music coming out of the wonderful equipment available these days is piss poor in general. There is no soul in anything "underground" anymore - everyone wants to be the next Scott Storch, P Diddy, or Tiesto - no one wants to stay small and give it their all.
