Moderators Lee Knight Posted November 22, 2006 Moderators Share Posted November 22, 2006 Wow! It was a great pleasure hearing Tony Bennett sing. He's... ...80! What a treat to hear such fantastic arrangements and some very wonderful songs. An American Classic is right. I cranked up the stereo for this one and the recording of the orchestra was perfect. To hear him exchange lines with Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, k.d. lang, Christina Agularia and John Legend was great. It's tempting to get into rating the various singers on how they did, I won't. They were all good in their own way, and held their own to various degrees with Tony. But every time it came back to Tony... Lord, what an interpreter of song this man is. Somehow, once he opened his mouth, I could hear the lyric. It just wasn't a man singing, it was the composition, with all its intensions. Tony knows how to read a song. Brilliant!
Members Bruce Swedien
All I can say is .....WOW!!!! Hearing and seeing Tony Bennett perform last night... Tears in my eyes, that's what it did... Now that is why I am in the music business... You probably aren't old enough to have read this, I am old enough to have read this.... Direct from the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra, in Life magazine in 1965, "Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business." And I know that Frank knew what he was talking about. Audiences still cheer today when Bennett sings his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco.'' Bruce Swedien

The shadow of your smileOur wistful little starIt was far, too highA teardrop kissed your lipsAnd so, so did I He just grabbed my heart. Incredible. A mix of sadness, of love and warmth. You just don't hear a singer pulling at your emotions like that.
Members russrags
Oooooh I missed it, maybe they'll rerun it again this weekend??? I did buy Tony Bennett's new CD though and have been BLOWN away by it. I play it every day. I had so much fun listening to it for the 1st time as my wife was reading the CD booklet, I was trying to not look, but guess who all the guest vocalists were. I got quite a few right. Man I Love this new CD. Bruce have you talked to Phil Ramone at all about the making of this CD??? It sounds like Tony was recorded with a $100,000 vocal chain and most all of the guest vocalists were recorded with an SM-58 ??? Maybe that's just so Tony shines??? He could record with a tin can and a string and still sound fantastic. This is one very special CD. RussNashville
Members MarkZ
Russ- NBC might re-run it on Bravo at some point this weekend, but I think the DVD of the show might be available at Target (they had a major sponsorship in the show). If it's not in their stores now, then maybe next week.
