Mac compatibility question

I am about to start a remote recording business in my new southern location. I currently use an iBook G4 with DP 4.61 and a OWC Neptune firewire drive. I am considering buying an iMac intel with 2 gig memory to expand my tracking capability and speed. My question is, how interchangeable are the files from the iBook G4 and the intel iMac? Will I be able to use DP with both computers interchangeably, or will the files be changed using the intel rig so that they will not playback with the older mac? Also, is DP 4.61 upgraded for the intel chip or do I have to buy DP 5?

DP 4.61 will NOT run on an intel Mac. If you upgrade to an Intel Mac, you will need to buy DP 5 if you still want to use DP.

DP 4.61 files will run great in DP 5. I have opened many DP 4.61 files in DP 5.11 with no issues. There is one exception to that though: If you use any 3rd party plugins that do not run as universal binaries, then you will need to buy upgrades for those as well. Additionally, if you use Waves plug-ins, they currently are not compatible with DP 5.11.

Offramp, I'm familiar with that backwards compatibility issue ;)

KB,

As stated, you will need DP 5 to run on the intel mac. Earlier versions are not available in universal binary.

If you want to take files from DP 5/intel back to the G4 you will need to use the "save as" and choose the correct version to save back to. However, you need to be aware that any third party (or new to DP 5) plug ins will not be available to the G4, so...

However, DP 5 should run well on the iBook. 5.11 is the current version, and is actually much more optimized and CPU efficient than 5.0, and probably even 4.x
