Is Logic Screwy For Everyone Or Is It Just Me?

Just a couple wierd glitchy things I'm wondering about. Do you guys experience this stuff or is there something I can do to fix it? I'm tired of workarounds.

1.) When I flatten a comp, many times it will change the chosen take. It will also delete any copy I've made of that region and stretch the borders out back to the extent of the audio file. I like to keep them as comps for a little while so I can have the takes to choose from. Is there a way to do this without having to deal with Logic messing up my arrangement?

2.) Sometimes the sound will just go out. Sometimes on one track, sometimes the whole mix. I mess around with stuff arbitrarily for a while and eventually it works again. Makes no sense to me :idk:

Any advice you guys could give would help me out a lot. Thanks

I've not had much luck with Logic Express 8 but I haven't worked with it much. I'm not even sure when I will try using it again.

I went ahead and upgraded my Sonar Producer from 5 to 7 and I'll be using that for home recording because I know Sonar best.

Try this forum:

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/

There are buckets of Logic users there.

First ish is do you have the latest version of Logic? -- As that is supposed to solve many but not by any means all problems.

Second, Logic itself apparently has issues with some versions of OS X and you'll want to do some searching in that forum -- but, for gosh sake, do not ask any questions without searching for answers there, first, though.

(We'll skip the problem there that some folks apparently get so close to the screen that they forget to tell people what DAW they're asking for help on -- a number of Gear Slutz apparently assume that everyone uses the same DAW and OS they do, so they simply wade into the question without first establishing what DAW/platform they're on. Kind of amusing for us lurkers.)

I don't know..I have my fair share of small-medium size bug issues with all programs, Pro Tools included. I have been enjoying Logic immensely the past couple of weeks since I got it. It's different and very dense for a guy coming from the Pro Tools world for he last decade but i'm figuring it out. I enjoy it from the standpoint of a songwriter. All the sounds are there and it's set up perfectly for composition. Funny you mention the comp thing because I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to do it the Pro Tools way with no luck so I finally pulled out the manual to learn how to do it the Logic Way. Ya know what, once you figure it out, it's actually easier, faster and more intuitive to comp in Logic then in Pro Tools. Haven't had many issues yet but I would say make sure you have the latest update that is correct for your computer. I'm in Tiger still and I believe it's Logic 8.02 on an 07 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33ghz, 2 gigs of Ram..I will be adding another gig to max this thing out. I run various exernal Firewire Drives for Audio and Video. I'm really Digging Logic! :thu:

Yes I'm on Leopard 10.5.4 and once I ran this update with Logic 8.0.2 things have been running a lot smoother. I Love being able to open my template with my 12 ssl strips, Superior 2, Ivory and a couple of bus's with wave's Ir all set up ready to go. From a song writing stand point I always got stuck getting that all setup before I could write, usually lost part of the idea, now I just write.

:). Logic's been stable since that update for me. Even better is that I work full time outside the studio, so I just leave everything on where I left off, LOCK THE CATS OUT and I can carry on where I left off. Unfortunately there's been a few weeks between writing.

Templates are a great idea and it's excellent that Logic also adopted this widely implemented idea. I assume it also has track templates, as well, yeah? In my DAW, I keep a small library of my most commonly used track types, with inputs, FX chains, and sends ready to go. One nice thing about the implementation of track templates in my DAW: if there are sends to a buss with specific FX set up in a track template, insertin an instance from that track template also creates the buss and buss FX if it doesn't already exist -- a great feature. I'm sure Logic has something similar, since my DAW version, the second to latest and about to be third to latest, is almost two years old.

Thanks for the input so far, guys. Yeah I didn't know there was an update, i'll definitely try that. And thanks for the link, blue- that should definitely help :thu:

I bought the Logic Studio box from the apple store about 4 months ago. So that version is what i have now :idk:

I'm using an iMac, the 20" Display, 2.4 GHz Dual core, 2GB Ram, with OSX Leopard.

Oh and another thing it does. on a MIDI track, sometimes I'll make a drum beat, that lasts for say, 4 bars. I copy and paste a couple times, leaving it off where I don't need it.

Then it just plays the whole time as if I had looped it across the whole song.

WTF!

I suggest firing up the software update app for the logic update.

You also want to get the latest pro application support update.

When you are doing the drums, are you using ultrabeat? if you are deactivate the powerswitch on the Ultra-beat interface to cut off the ultrabeats internal sequencer.

what are environments?
:idk:

The Environment is the area of Logic that ties everything together - both internally and externally. Everything in Logic is an 'Object', and the Environment is where they're defined and linked together.

It's one of the most powerful features in Logic, but also the primary reason that Logic is (or more accurately, was) considered to have a steep learning curve. Until L8, you had to create pretty much everything in the environment manually. Wanna create a new track? - gotta create objects in the Environment. Of course users set up a template with everything defined, and rarely had to do it on the fly.

L8 takes care of all those fundamental tasks automatically - simplifying workflow. I'd says it's pretty successful in that regard if an L8 user doesn't know what it is :thu:

Yes, Logic Studio has some bugs. I've been using it since 1995, when it first came on PC (and had to switch to Mac when Apple bought the company and dumped us). There's always been some issue to be dealt with in every version, but in the end I've always been happy with it.

What can be frustrating is that sometimes the bugs are Apple's fault and sometimes they're MY fault because I set some parameter wrong. My best hope has been to study Logic tutorials well enough that I can troubleshoot more efficiently. Then I'll hit up Apple's support site or www.bigbluelounge.com, which is full of DAW users of all types, each with their own section, like Logic.
